Summer is flying by and many families are thinking of ways to squeeze in a relatively inexpensive vacation before thoughts turn to the start of the school year. It's a good thing we're surrounded by incredible (and close) spots to visit right here in West Virginia.
In all corners of the state, our parks offer a chance to experience not only our natural wonders, but great food, luxurious spas, outdoor adventures -- even stargazing cabins, coming soon to Coopers Rock State Forest.
Here in the Upper Ohio Valley, we can visit Tomlinson Run State Park, Coopers Rock is less than two hours away and even some of the parks in the heart of West Virginia can be done in a day.
There are almost 50 state parks and forests. And if a family is interested in taking in a little state history, too, the number of local and state historical sites along the way on just about any road trip should provide plenty of opportunities to learn and explore.
Politicians do a lot of talking about making West Virginia the kind of place outsiders want to visit -- and perhaps decide to put down roots -- but in doing that, the state Department of Tourism has done an excellent job of making our natural and cultural wonders the perfect additions to any family's almost staycation.
