We're a little more than two months away from the general election, but candidates for offices in all levels of government are making their way into our communities.
Whether it's to place their signs, meet with constituents or take part in rallies, we will be seeing campaigns in full swing in the coming weeks.
We encourage our residents, no matter their political leaning, to take advantage of these opportunities whenever they have a chance. Please don't go with an intention of causing disturbances. Instead, attend with an open mind and take time to listen and learn.
We have candidates with a variety of thoughts and platforms taking part in this year's election, and, as responsible voters, we all should make use of the opportunities available to us to learn more about all of those who are appearing on the ballot, their backgrounds, their ideas and their plans if they are elected.
The first such event will take place at 6 p.m., Thursday, at the T. Kosciusko Hall with a meet-the-candidates-style activity organized by the Hancock and Brooke Democratic Executive Committees and the Hancock and Brooke Democratic Women organizations.
Democratic candidates for Congress, West Virginia governor and other statewide offices, as well as House of Delegates and some local posts are expected to be there.
We are certain the local Republican committees are planning a similar event for sometime in the future.
With a more local focus in mind, the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce is organizing a forum highlighting Weirton's four mayoral candidates at 6 p.m., Sept. 18 at the Millsop Community Center.
It's important to learn as much as we can about those seeking to represent us. Ultimately, no matter their role, they will be our ears and voices. They will make decisions on our behalf. We should all want to know where they actually stand, and hear it directly from them and not just through political rhetoric.
