If you have found yourself thinking that summer is slipping away, you really are not that far off.
Kids will be returning to school in a few weeks, and that means high school football will be back. In fact, while football players and other fall sports athletes are going through training work, some activities already have started --the golf season is underway, and soccer and volleyball will be starting in about a week.
Another reminder is in the annual sales tax holidays. While West Virginia's has passed, Ohio's annual tax break will continue until 11:59 p.m. Thursday.
With all of that said, if you are looking for something to do during the next week or so, there is no shortage of activities to enjoy.
Tonight, for instance, will bring the August edition of Wednesdays in Wintersville, set to run from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with the theme of 1980s Flashback and with a performance by Jimmy Z, a big hair contest and an exhibit of prom dresses.
Also scheduled for Wednesday, the Toronto concert series continues with Tribute Night, featuring Steve Dorsey as Roy Orbison and Kurt Nova as Elvis Presley. The show begins at 7 p.m. at the Gazebo Commons at North Third and Market streets.
Live music continues Thursday at the Berkman Amphitheater in Fort Steuben Park with a bonus concert with performances from Taylor Jo and the Copper Creek Band and Full Circle Band. Music will begin at 7 p.m.
Friday night will be busy in Weirton: The Weirton Concert Series, presented by the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau at the Weirton Event Center, will come to an end with a 7 p.m. performance by Pendulum, a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band, and the annual Marland Heights 5K Classic will be held, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Also on Friday, Brooke Hills Park will celebrate National Kids Day with free admission to the pool and other activities slated to run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The streets of Toronto, meanwhile, will be filled with runners Saturday, when the Lou Ann Burchfield and Kathy Hannan Hale Colors of Cancer Memorial 5K Run-Walk gets underway at 9 a.m. The event is one of four races held annually in the city that benefit various causes.
Among other area events scheduled for Saturday are Teapot Day in Chester, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the area of the World's Largest Teapot, and the annual Peach Festival at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, located on Three Springs Drive in Weirton, which will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
And, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, members of Chapter 859 of the Experimental Aircraft Association will hold a Touch-a-Plane event at the Geary A. Bates Jefferson County Airpark.
Plus there are farmers markets set for this evening in Wintersville and Brooke County and Thursday morning in Steubenville, and other activities planned around the region in the next week, including the Jefferson County Fair -- opening ceremonies are set for Monday evening, with the full event getting started on Tuesday.
There's always a lot to do across the Tri-State Area -- get out and enjoy everything the region has to offer.
