Our region's county fair season is winding down, but that doesn't mean there's still not time to savor the experience.
That includes this weekend, when the annual Brooke County Fair will be held at Brooke Hills Park.
The event, scheduled to run from 5 p.m. Friday through 5 p.m. Sunday, once again will serve as a reminder that county fairs offer something that just about everyone can enjoy, including a wide variety of games, food, activities and entertainment.
There will be wrestling and a demolition derby, a rodeo and information about Revolutionary War re-enactors. You'll be able to enjoy a great deal of music throughout weekend, including a performance from the local favorite 40 Plus, one of their last as members are planning to retire.
Do you like dogs? You'll have the chance to learn more about animals during the weekend. There will be a petting zoo, a chance for children to work on crafts, a farmers market for children, a rooster calling contest, a pet show, a queen of queens pageant, annual competitions involving students from Brooke County schools, a pizza eating contest, a corn hole tournament and the Twins, Triplets and More contest -- plus plenty of other activities.
There will be opportunities to discover the world of agriculture and barnyard animals, as well as the work of 4-H and a chili cookoff.
Opening ceremonies are set for 5:30 p.m. Friday, and they will include a flag-raising by local Cub Scouts and the traditional butterfly release.
That's a lot to squeeze into three days, but all of that activity helps to make county fairs special events. And, it's all possible thanks to the efforts and co-chairs Patty Lish and Janice McFadden and their committee of dedicated volunteers.
The Brooke County Fair is another example of the many great community events that are held throughout the Tri-State Area. We hope you will be able to attend.
