Reading remains fundamental

2 min read

Weirton Elementary School has organized numerous programs through the years to encourage its pupils to read, emphasizing the importance of literacy throughout their lives.

Whether it be the One Book, One School, One Community campaign, Accelerator Reading or its Reader of the Month, youth from Pre-K through fourth grade are instilled with the idea that reading is fundamental.

Now, a new program has been launched at the school through the purchase of three Inchy's Book Vending Machines.

Global Vending Group placed its first book vending machine in 2018, identified with the Inchy the Bookworm mascot. Today, the machines are found in more than 8,500 school across four countries.

At Weirton Elementary, pupils are able to earn special tokens by reaching goals in the school's existing reading programs or meeting certain achievement and comprehension marks in their learning.

Those tokens will allow them to go to one of the vending machines and select a book, providing an additional incentive in their learning.

As with many programs at Weirton Elementary, there are ways for local residents and businesses to help.

The school is asking for support from the community, either through financial contributions or the donation of age-appropriate books to be placed into the vending machines.

This will help to ensure there is a readily available selection of reading material for the youth.

We applaud Hancock County Schools for adopting this innovative program to encourage reading in our youth, and hope the community shows its support, both through contributions and by instilling in their children the importance of reading.
