While a great deal of attention is focused on planned or ongoing improvements to the Millsop Community Center, Marland Heights Park, and Starvaggi Memorial Park, let's not forget some of the plans for Weirton's smaller playgrounds.
In recent weeks, the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation has sought bids for improvements to the Bennett Drive Playground as well.
The playground, located at the intersection of Bennett Drive and St. Ann Way in the Weircrest area of Weirton, is a smaller recreation site, but, for those living there, it's just as important.
City officials note Census information shows that while the area qualifies for support through the federal Community Development Block Grant program, it also shows one of the fastest growth areas for young families.
Young families often mean young children, and those children will need somewhere to go to play.
Currently, Bennett Drive has a shelter, a set of swings, a basketball court, and a few benches.
While there might not be major changes to alter the landscape of the park, it is good to see the possibility of some newer, and safer equipment.
We appreciate the efforts of Weirton's Park Board and look forward to the project once it is complete.
