Annual 5K race a community tradition

For 29 years, the Marland Heights 5K Classic has been a competitive race, a community event and a yearly milestone as the summer season begins to wind down. It brings together athletes of all levels, as well as families and more who set off along the course through the Marland Heights area of the city.

This year’s race is set for tonight at Marland Heights Park, and whether you are a seasoned runner, a beginner or just someone who wants to get in a bit of a walk, we hope you will take part.

There is still time to register. Just show up prior to the beginning of the races tonight. The day-of registration fee is $30 for adults and $20 for teenagers.

Races begin at 6:30 p.m., and will include the youth fun run, a two-mile fitness walk and the namesake 5K. Timing will be monitored by GCXC Race Timing of Canfield, Ohio.

A cookout will follow the race, at which time awards will be handed out in the various race categories.

Of course, none of it would be possible without the work of the staff from the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation and the local sponsors.

The Marland Heights 5K truly is something for the community, with many showing up each year to take part or just to cheer on family and friends.

We thank all of those participants, as well as organizers and sponsors, for continuing to make this a successful event.

We look forward to another great race.
