Continuing a peach of a tradition

For more than 60 years, the annual Peach Festival has been a mainstay for the St. Thomas Episcopal Church and the Weirton community.

That tradition will continue Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., as the church offers a variety of peach-centered treats, along with cabbage rolls, haluski and other refreshments, with a variety of attractions and entertainment also in the works.

This year, that includes a car cruise, craft and food vendors, an inflatable attraction for the kids, and more.

Area residents will be able to stop by Saturday to get their fill of shortcakes, ice cream, pies and more.

Visitors also will have an opportunity to try their luck to win a variety of prizes through the Tisket-a-Tasket Basket Drawing.

The Peach Festival originated as a fundraiser for the church, assisting with its daily operations as well as various community outreach programs. Throughout its more-than-60-year history, though, it also became a focal point of local summer festivities. Area residents look forward to this weekend each year.

We offer our appreciation to the volunteers who step up each year to organize this event, including those who spent time slicing more than 30 crates of peaches this year and preparing the food and desserts.

Your contributions to this festival, and the community, do not go unnoticed.
