Start your year in the great outdoors

If you’ve already gotten far enough ahead of the game, it’s just about time to relax, enjoy some time with friends and family while celebrating Christmas and maybe even start making plans for New Year’s Day.

West Virginia State Parks has an idea — 22 parks will host 24 First Day Hikes on Jan. 1.

Tomlinson Run State Park is among them, with Audra, Beech Fork, Blackwater Falls, Bluestone, Cacapon, Canaan Valley Resort, Cass Scenic Railroad, Cedar Creek, Elk River Trail, Little Beaver, Lost River, North Bend, Pipestem Resort, Tu-Endie-Wei, Twin Falls Resort, Tygart Lake, Valley Falls and Watoga state parks as well as Coopers Rock, Kanawha and Panther state forests also hosting hikes.

What a wonderful opportunity for families to spend time outdoors in our beautiful state parks and celebrate 2026. As long as everyone is dressed for a walk in the weather and wearing the right footwear (and brings plenty of water and snacks), it should be an inspiring experience — particularly for those who are perhaps considering getting more exercise, spending more time outdoors or exploring more of our state’s natural treasures in the new year.

“These annual hikes are one of our favorite traditions because they bring people together to enjoy West Virginia’s natural beauty,” said West Virginia State Parks acting chief Dillard Price. “Whether you’re setting a new fitness goal or simply want to experience our parks in a different season, First Day Hikes offer a fun and refreshing way to begin the year.”

If you’re on the fence, why not give it a try? This is the perfect introduction to West Virginia hiking, particularly when you know you can visit to explore in spring, summer and fall, too.
