Ujcich was a class act
To the Editor,
This past weekend, the entire sports community, along with the Brooke Bruin community, lost a very close and dear friend.
We were all saddened and shocked to hear of the loss of Ron Ujcich, Brooke High School coach and mentor. I am sure I can speak for all local sports officials who ever had the opportunity to work for Ron, that he is one person who we will miss dearly.
Personally, I cannot express enough, the relationship I had with Ron as an official and a friend. Ron was also the field manager for the Beast of the East Tournament at Brooke High School’s baseball facility. In my dealings with him, I can only say what a wonderful job he did in managing the game site. He was very professional in every aspect of his duties. He would always make sure the officials had everything we needed and treated us like his best friends. Whether providing us with a clean locker room to change or providing us with water when the weather was very hot, or just making sure the field was always playable and safe. Ujcich would always be there for us no matter what the circumstances.
Any time we had poor weather, Ron would go out of his way to make sure the field was made ready to play in a timely manner. My personal experiences with Ron as a baseball official, when I officiated his games, were second to none. He was always respectful of the officials win or lose. I can honestly say I never heard him ever berate another coach, official or player. He was just a class act.
Again, as I previously mentioned, I believe I can speak for all officials in the area who had dealings with him in saying he will be missed — he was just enjoyable to be around. I, along with the members of the Steubenville Umpires Association, would like to express our deepest sympathy to the Ujcich family and to the Brooke community. God bless Ron Ujcich. May he rest in peace.
