The OVAC struck out when Coach Sherrie Garner was excluded from its distinguished list of nominees for Coach of the Year.
Think about it. The Oak Glen Golden Bears haven't been to the WV State Softball Tournament for 23 years. The team was undefeated through the regular season and Sectional Tournament. They lost one game in the Regional Tournament, but came back to win the first place trophy.
To bring a team back to win the tournament more than exhibits the coaching acumen of Coach Garner. This only happens when a head coach, along with her coaching staff have the capacity to rally the team. To me, this is what a Coach of the Year symbolizes.
I have no idea why Coach Garner was excluded from this distinguished list. Perhaps, it is as simple as Oak Glen being too far north of the I-70 Corridor.
I tip my hat to Coach Garner, her coaching staff, players, parents, Oak Glen High School, and the community for a job well done. Regardless of the outcome, you are all champions and have made us all proud!
