To the Editor,
The Second Annual High School Students Art Exhibition opening reception sponsored by the Top of WV Arts Council, a sub-committee of the Top of WV Convention & Visitors Bureau, was held Saturday, November 6th at the Summit Art Gallery with approximately 120 attending.
Brooke High School, Oak Glen High School, Weir High School, and John D. Rockefeller Career Center featured 53 art students participating with 59 pieces of art displayed. Three teachers also have artwork featured.
Most students that displayed their artwork were there with their family and friends. The support these young people received was overwhelming. The excitement on the students' faces said it all as they viewed their artwork displayed in a gallery regardless of the bonus of winning a ribbon award.
The Weirton Daily Times Managing Editor, Craig Howell stated in his editorial Sunday, Nov. 7th that it has been said that he hears the refrain for younger people to step forward and be involved in community activities. This annual event is exposing these young people to the cultural aspects of the area. It serves to give them an awareness and a sense of belonging to something larger.
I realize Mr. Howell was not directly speaking about the arts however, the arts are a part of our community fiber and needs to have leaders step forward to continue the arts awareness program already in progress.
My thanks to the high school administrations, the art teachers, the TWVCVB, and TWVAC members that helped to make this exhibition event a great success.
The artworks will be available for viewing until December 10th at the Summit Art Gallery located at 3539 Main Street, Weirton, from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
