Focus on what’s important

2 min read

To the Editor,

The old adage "it ain't the size of the dog in a fight but the size of the fight in the dog" is playing out on the world stage in Ukraine. However, Ukrainians are not dogs -- obviously far from it. The only dog in this fight (and a rabid one at that) is Putin. For anyone, let alone a former president, to suggest this animal is worthy of praise says as much about them as it does Putin.

I am a cultural conservative. Much of the democrats' cultural platform is anathema. How Biden became president is still puzzling. Yet, at this time, under these circumstances, as the world watches in horror the unprovoked devastation unleashed on Ukraine, it is not the time for conservative politicians to lecture their constituents on "this is how we got here." Instead they need to invest their energies and abilities in helping our current president and administration do its best to aid this fledgling democracy to send this totalitarian despot back to his cage.

Yes it will cost us. Plenty. Anything worthwhile always does. We as a nation over the decades have blown trillions in dollars and lost or maimed thousands upon thousands of lives to promote democracy in countries that culturally preferred corruption to authentic patriotism. Now we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to aid and abet the real thing -- Ukraine!

As individuals we can pray for the Ukrainians and contribute to relief funds -- the most trustworthy through Ukraine Catholic Churches (the address of one is below). As a democrat, a republican, or a non-partisan, it is time to put our differences on hold and concentrate on supplying all the military and humanitarian aid we can muster to help our kindred spirits who are laying down their lives as our forefathers did nearly two-and-a-half centuries ago for the right to exist as a freedom loving people.

"Humanitarian Aid Fund for Ukraine" can be sent to Ukrainian Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia, 810 North Franklin Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123. Thank you.
