McGeehan deserves support

3 min read

To the Editor,

I am Delegate Chris Phillips, finishing my second term in the West Virginia House of Delegates. I am writing to offer my full and unqualified endorsement of Delegate Pat McGeehan for reelection to the First District seat. I met Pat when I was first running and he shared an office with my predecessor who was retiring. Before I even met him I was impressed with his extensive library covering politics, religion and philosophy, including some books he has written. It told me Pat was a deep and serious thinker who carefully weighs his decisions and understands ramifications that many others will miss.

I was extremely fortunate to keep Danny's office and have Pat's guidance through my first term in office. He is what a legislator should strive to be. His first and only loyalty is to his constituents and the people of West Virginia. Many get caught up in the trappings of office and the lure of making deals for personal advancement but that holds no appeal for Pat. He doesn't seek approval or favor of other officials and doesn't go along to get along. He never backs down from a fight if he is fighting for the people over the powerful. He is loyal to his friends and never fails to speak the truth even if evasion or silence would advance his cause, values that are uncommonly rare among all too many who seek public office.

Policies and legislation come and go and it is easy to get lost in situational ethics in politics if a lawmaker doesn't have rock solid morals and principles that guide their decision making. This is never an issue for Pat, his deeply held religious faith and carefully considered personal philosophy are the foundation he has built his reputation upon in Charleston. The temptation to cut corners and sacrifice first principles for political expediency is too great for many to resist in the political arena but I have never seen Pat do the wrong thing for what many might consider the right reason.

I count myself very lucky to have Delegate McGeehan as a friend and colleague in the Legislature. The people of the First District are just as lucky to have an honorable and intelligent man representing them in Charleston and defending their rights and freedoms. I would humbly ask the voters to reward his service with their vote on November 8.
