To the Editor,
The Bible tells us that we are to love and take care of each other.
The Bible clearly teaches us in James 2:14-18, "14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works."
Now, works do not save us. There is nothing we could ever do to deserve salvation and to, therefore, spend eternity in heaven. We are saved by grace through faith, period. Works are the result of salvation as we seek to obey God because we love Him. So as born-again Christians, we do not do "works" to get saved. We do works because we love the Lord Jesus Christ and want to obey Him. We are called to love like He loves.
I'm appealing to all Christians to allow God to show His love through you this Thanksgiving season by helping the poor. It is a great way to show God our thanks to Him by helping those who need our help.
I am a part of a local Christian music band called Led By Mercy. We are hosting a free Thanksgiving benefit concert at Free Gift Baptist Church at 3900 Brightway Street, Weirton on Thursday, November 17, at 7:00 p.m.
The concert will feature both contemporary Christian music and traditional hymns. We will spend the evening thanking God for his many blessings. This is a free benefit concert, so we encourage you to consider bringing a non-perishable food item or clothing item that we will distribute to the needy for Thanksgiving and beyond.
