The Fourth Annual High School Students Art Exhibition sponsored by the Top of WV Arts Council, a sub-committee of the Top of WV Convention Visitors Bureau was held Thursday, November 9th at the Summit Art Gallery with an opening reception having over 150 in attendance.
The event featured over sixty art students participating with over ninety pieces of art displayed. Four art teachers also provided an artwork for display.
The high schools of Brooke, Madonna, Oak Glen, Weir along with the John D. Rockefeller Career Center participated in the themed show of "It's a Zoo Out There".
This exhibition provides a venue to allow the young student artist to participate in a function that takes them away from the classroom. It also means the art teachers expend extra work on their part in preparation for the exhibit. This includes providing required paperwork and framing the students works. Delivery, hanging the show and take down of the show adds to their workload. Some students help with organizing the display and hanging the artworks which adds to their experience.
The teachers form the jury to judge the works for award ribbons. The teacher in the school being judged does not participate. A member of the TWV Arts Council also participates in the judging of all schools. We cannot thank these teachers enough for their special effort.

This newspaper recently published a Question of the Day that asked is enough done to encourage the arts in local schools. The results were 34% "yes" and 66% "no". I invite all of the voters that responded to this poll to attend a TWV Arts Council monthly meeting that is held at the Summit Art Gallery on the first Thursday of the month at 5 P.M. We would very much like to hear suggestions that would benefit student art exposure.
I offer my thanks to the school administrations, the TWVCVB Board and Executive Staff, and TWVAC members that helped make this exhibition a great success.
The exhibition will be available for viewing through Thursday, December 14th at the Summit Art Gallery located at 3539 Main Street, Weirton, from 9:30 A.M. until 5 P.M., Monday through Friday. I encourage all to stop by and marvel at the art these students created. The artwork displays some great talent.
