Those little things really can be a big deal

By JANICE KIASKI 4 min read

A car put to bed for the evening probably doesn't seem like a big deal, a major accomplishment that brings a sigh of relief for a herculean task completed at long last.

But it's one of those needs-to-be-done duties of the day, especially if you prefer getting into a car in the morning that's not exposed to the elements and, therefore, you aren't either.

But if you're the one who has left the car outside in the driveway, instead of putting it in the garage, and it's getting late, and you're all comfy-cozy on the couch ready to drift off to have some more dreams that make no sense, the last thing you really want to do is get uncomfy, find your purse, dig from here to China for the keys, jam your feet into the first pair of shoes you find and trudge out the front door to the driveway to pull the merry Kiaskimobile into its beddy-bye stall.

So how sweet it is to discover -- after a quick glance out the window to confirm it's a chore still awaiting your attention -- that it's already been done on your behalf and it's back to your beddy-bye and make-no-sense dreams you may return.

"Ahhhh, you pulled my car in the garage!!" I gushed the other evening at Better Half's gesture of gallantry that he'd executed just because he's a good guy following through on a reflex, not a to-do list item.

You'd have thought I'd just been delivered a dozen long-stemmed red roses. Or that he'd thrown his best jacket over a puddle of mud so I could step on it and avoid getting my shoes all mucky-yucky.

My knight in shining put-the-car-away armor!

When the little things in life get done because someone else is looking out for you or extending a helping hand or taking initiative or just being downright thoughtful, sometimes that's a really big deal -- making it a moment to secretly celebrate or publicly do a cartwheel (only if it won't cause you or anyone else bodily harm, of course.)

Sometimes on Thursday night -- Garbage Day Eve at our house -- I experience this same feeling and moment of appreciation once again.

Isn't it nice to find out someone already has emptied out all the trash cans and replaced them with new garbage bags, and the garbage has been hauled out to the garage where it's keeping your car company until morning when it's time to move it out for garbage pickup?

Little things are a big deal.

And this includes laundry, that it gets done from the start-to-finish cycle.

How many are the times I've thrown a load of clothes in the washing machine, only to forget all about them.

When this realization occurs to you, that you had washed a load at some point, you can be mighty disappointed, especially if the outfit you were planning to wear right now this very minute is in the washing machine, ready to make the journey to the dryer but needing a little help to get there.

Wearing wet clothes isn't a good look, not a great fashion statement.

But, lo and behold, "how sweet it is!" (in the words of Jackie Gleason) to discover that the clothes not only got dried, but folded, too.

Little things are a big deal, including when you're brought a cup of coffee when you need it the most.

It doesn't have sugar in it because "you're already sweet enough." And it's just the right shade of beige because it's got the right amount of Cremora.

Those little things are a big deal.

Sweet dreams to that.
