There is nothing good on television anymore

This week, I am looking for some suggestions.

I can not stand the humidity and therefore try not to go outside whenever it is 85 degrees or higher. And that has pretty much been our entire summer, thus far, unfortunately.

I actually used to enjoy this type of weather. Now that I am much older, I absolutely abhor it. So, perhaps my favorite thing to do when I am stuck indoors is to simply sit in an air-conditioned room and watch television.

Preferably with cake.

There aren’t too many hours in which I am able to do this, however, as I am either at work, cleaning the house or have the opportunity to spend time with my grandson — especially on the weekends.

Of course, when Layne visits, I have to watch “Baby Shark,” or “Bluey.” Otherwise, he is not that happy of a camper.

I do apologize if you are now singing the “Baby Shark” theme song. I really am sorry. That stupid song gets stuck in your head and your brain continues to hum or sing it aloud for hours upon hours.

Realistically, I look like a putz because I’m a 52-year-old woman going around singing an infant’s song. To myself.

Layne’s shows are typically not the shows I would normally turn on and sit through if he wasn’t in my company. That is why I am searching for help.

Although I have been known to watch “Blues Clues” and “Franklin,” (the turtle cartoon) when my children were little. They were at school when I watched them … but that’s not the point. Please don’t judge me.

Anyway, there is just so much garbage on television anymore and I certainly don’t want to waste time trying to find a program suitable to watch. One of my biggest pet peeves is watching an hour-long show that ends up being a complete waste of time. Either it ends very poorly or the actors are just awful. Or I can’t follow whatever the plot is supposed to be. Or it’s a show where the person wearing the most clothes is the cameraman.

That isn’t television. At least, not real television. Plus, it’s an hour I will never get back. And time is certainly precious.

That is why I am reaching out. To you. And asking for your opinion.

If there is anyone reading this who knows of a television show they absolutely love and would like to recommend, please contact me through e-mail and let me know the name and where I can watch it.

I do not have cable but do have several apps on my smart TV. Any show appearing on Peacock, Paramount+, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Showtime, STARZ or HBO will work.

There are probably others that I can’t think of at this moment. So please, advise me as to what I am missing out on. As a reference to what I enjoy, some of my favorites would include, “Big Brother,” “Ghost,” “Criminal Minds,” “Survivor,” “Amazing Race,” “Elsbeth,” Monk,” “MasterChef,” “MasterChef Junior” and sometimes “America’s Got Talent” — if there’s a dog act involved.

But seriously, I would appreciate everyone’s recommendations. I don’t really care to watch movies because I find them to be far-too long and pointless in a lot of places.

I usually can’t sit through an entire film.

My all-time favorite show was “Scorpion.” I have been binge-watching it the past week-and-a-half.

And of course, since it was my all-time favorite, (yes, even better than “Leave it to Beaver” and “Andy Griffith,”) they took it off the air.

After only four seasons. But I foresaw that coming. Because every single time I say that I like or love something, especially when I say it aloud, it soon vanishes. Gone in the blink of an eye. Literally.

Does anyone else besides me and my mother have this problem? Networks cancel shows.

Designers quit making the clothing you like. Companies stop making the product.

It’s as if they are listening and removing from society anything and everything that provided me with some kind of happiness.

Just because you stated you enjoyed it.

I am not naive and know they listen to us. But they certainly don’t have to keep breaking my heart over and over and leaving me only with the things I detest. It isn’t fair.

Had I money, I would wager that since I commented on the few shows I like in this column that something will soon happen and they won’t be around by next season, either.

Hence, chocolate chip ice cream. I understand some companies still make chocolate chip ice cream.

But not the kind that was my mother’s favorite. I can’t recall if it was Ruggles or Bryer’s or who made it. But they stopped making it as soon as she stated to me that it was her absolute favorite.

They do make mint chocolate chip, though. Who likes mint chocolate chip? No one I’ve ever met. And yet, it’s everywhere. It even goes on sale. Still not gonna eat it. But this was years ago when they halted production of the ice cream she adored. What did I do? I wrote and told the company about it. They let me purchase a huge thing of chocolate chip ice cream, like the kind you see when you go into Baskin Robbins in the display case?

I purchased one of those for her. Twice. They mailed them to me on dry ice and everything. And yes, it did cost a heck of a lot of money. But it was definitely worth it to see her so happy.

Heck, the only soap opera I ever watched was “Guiding Light.” That played on the radio prior to televisions coming out. That was how long it had been around and how popular it used to be. I started watching it when I was in the second grade. It went off the air more than a decade ago.

Why? Because it was my favorite.

Television suggestions can be e-mailed to jstenger@heraldstaronline.com.

But please, don’t say the name of it too loudly. At least if you want to ensure it will still be around next season.
