Madonna begins season 1-0
NEW PHILADELPHIA -- The Weirton Madonna football team defeated Tusky Central 34-0 in its season opener on Saturday.
Franciscan's Dig Pink Day coming soon
STEUBENVILLE -- The Franciscan University of Steubenville volleyball team will host its annual Dig Pink Day on Sept. 9 to support breast cancer research and local cancer care.
The 1 p.m. matchups will be Edison vs. Steubenville and Beaver Local vs. Brooke. The 3 p.m. matchups will be Jefferson County Christian School vs. Seton and Edison vs. Brooke.

Big Red boosters to meet
STEUBENVILLE -- The Big Red Boosters Club will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Harding Stadium Field House.
All are welcome, memberships are available and freshmen parents are invited.
Local boxers to compete today
CHESTER -- Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort, in association with Made Men Promotions, will host a boxing card today featuring a large contingent of local talent.
The event, billed as "Labor Day Eve Boxing," will be held inside the casino's Grand Ballroom. The first bell is set for 7 p.m. and gates will open at 5 p.m.
Unbeaten middleweight Joey "The Hitman" Holt from East Liverpool, Nelson Best from Knoxville and Steubenville's Branko Busick are the featured local professionals on the card.
Holt, who is 7-0 and has six wins by knockout, will be looking for his fourth consecutive KO. He will test Bellaire's John Fisher (4-2) in a six-round bout. Holt has scored three first round knockouts in his seven fights.
Best, known as the "Nightmare," is 2-0. He is scheduled to face Nick "The Brick" Messer from Kentucky. Best, also a standout MMA amateur, won both of his fights by knockout. His fight with Messer is scheduled for four rounds.
Busick will take on MMA veteran Michael Bogner from Toledo. Busick, who has scored first round knockouts in all of his MMA victories, will be making his cruiserweight debut in the four-round bout.
Other valley standouts set to appear include Steubenville's Paul "Red Dog" Eakle, Follansbee's Chris Nemeth and Wintersville's Daniel Hague. Eakle is matched with Brandon Perkins of Parkersburg, a two-time Toughman champion. Andrew Odell of Mingo Junction, the 2017 Wheeling Toughman champ, will test Nemeth and Hague is matched against Bellaire's Richie Lowe.

Browns cut Najee Murray
CLEVELAND (AP) -- High-priced backup quarterback Brock Osweiler has been officially cut by the Cleveland Browns, who found some help from an unlikely source.
The team trimmed its roster to the mandated 53 on Saturday by terminating the contracts of Osweiler and veteran guard John Greco while releasing 11 other players, including Steubenville Big Red graduate Najee Murray.
The AP and several other outlets reported Osweiler's expected departure on Friday along with that of Greco, defensive lineman Xavier Cooper and kicker Cody Parkey.
Osweiler, who has a guaranteed $16 million contract for this season, came in a trade from Houston in March. Osweiler was the only QB cut as the Browns kept rookie DeShone Kizer, Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan -- none of whom has won an NFL game. The Browns pulled off a trade with their chief rival, acquiring wide receiver Sammie Coates from the Pittsburgh Steelers for a sixth-round pick in 2018.
Scherzer hit on calf, believes injury isn't serious
MILWAUKEE -- Washington's Max Scherzer was hit in the left calf by a liner in the first inning and was lifted after throwing 75 pitches over five innings Saturday night, but the 2016 NL Cy Young Award winner said he didn't anticipate missing much time with the injury.
"That's one of the worst spots to get hit, no matter how hard or soft it is," Scherzer said after the Nationals' 3-2 win over the Brewers. "It tightened up in the second (inning) and was basically at the same level of tightness all of the way through."
The right-hander allowed two hits and two walks while striking out two in five innings.
"I could pitch on it but I couldn't run," he said. "I could feel in my mechanics that I was still getting through the ball, so I knew I wasn't in danger of hurting my arm."
Scherzer left with the game tied at 1.
"We thought that was as far as he could go," Washington manager Dusty Baker said. "I'm sure it's going to be sore for a couple of days. He's icing it and we think he's going to be all right."
He was removed from a game at Miami on Aug. 1 with a neck injury, but didn't miss a start.Scherzer, who won the AL Cy Young Award with Detroit in 2013, is 13-5 with a 2.19 ERA in 26 starts for Washington.
