Weir High splits at Ripken tourney

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. — The Weir High softball team split a pair of games during the Ripken Experience on Thursday.

In the first game, the Red Riders fell to Fairport High School of New York, 7-5. Liv Rosnick went the distance but took the loss, walking four and striking out five.

Offensively, Mallory Rosnick had a triple, single and two RBIs. Taylor Webster singled twice and drove home a pair. Liv Rosnick collected a double and a single, while Sophia Mikula and Bella Aperfine each produced two singles.

In the second game, Weir High defeated Elliott County High School of Kentucky, 13-2, in five innings. Sam Kaczmarek pitched the complete-game victory, walking none and striking out three.

Mikula had the big bat, as she belted a home run, singled twice and drove home four. Aperfine and Chesney Tice had three singles and one RBI each. Liv Rosnick recorded a double and two singles. Webster and Kaczmarek each singled and drove in one.

The Red Riders (11-10) have another doubleheader today. They face LaBrae at 9 a.m., then Kings Academy of Tennessee at noon.

WELLSBURG — Brooke’s Haley Birmingham tossed a five-inning no-hitter during the softball team’s 8-0 victory over East Liverpool on Thursday.

In fact, Birmingham was one walk away from throwing a perfect game. She also struck out nine batters and produced a double and RBI at the plate. Kloee Billick had a single and two RBIs, while Rachel Kazmirski added an RBI.

The Bruins (12-8) host Parkersburg South for a noon contest on Saturday.

BYESVILLE — Taylor Scott produced a home run, double and four RBIs to lead the Indian Creek softball team to a 4-1 victory over Meadowbrook on Thursday.

Kaydee Kinsey picked up the complete-game victory, walking one and striking out a pair. She also had a double. Kacie Vandeborne and Madi Ely each added two singles.

RAYLAND — The Edison softball team only needed five innings to defeat Buckeye Local, 14-3, on Thursday.

Kennadie McElroy went the distance and picked up the victory, walking three and striking out one. Maddie Brenstuhl tallied three singles and two RBIs at the plate. Kiley Babel had two doubles, a single and three RBIs. Hannah Christoff produced a double, two singles and an RBI. Gabby Carpenter doubled twice and brought home four.

For the Panthers (2-13), MaKayla Meeks took the loss. She walked four and struck out four in the complete game. Offensively, Camryn Case had a single and two RBIs. Sierra Dudzik singled and had an RBI. Alaire Destifanes also singled.

Buckeye Local heads to Edison on Saturday for a tri with East Palestine.

Big Red wins twice

BRIDGEPORT — The Steubenville softball team defeated North Marion and Bridgeport in a tri on Thursday.

In the first game, Big Red downed North Marion, 11-3, thanks to a seven-run second inning. Madison Fields tallied four hits in as many at-bats.

Big Red then defeated Bridgeport, 9-2, thanks to a five-run fifth. Fields started and picked up the victory in 6 2/3 innings. She allowed two runs on four hits, one walk and struck out eight. Offensively, Lakyn Blackburn, Sadie Carducci, Maggi Cucarese, Raven Banks and Leah Ferguson all had multiple hits.

Catholic Central 13, Wellsville 3

STEUBENVILLE — The Catholic Central softball team celebrated senior night with a 13-3 victory over Wellsville on Wednesday.

Jayda Jones picked up the victory in the circle and produced two singles and two RBIs at the dish. Bella Zinno collected three hits and an RBI. Bailie Murphy homered and brought home a pair. Karmen DiBiase had a triple, single and two RBIs. Katelynn Dorsey produced two hits and two RBIs, while Veronica Phillipson added a double and an RBI.



Edison sweeps Buckeye

RICHMOND — The Edison baseball swept Buckeye Local with 7-0 and 13-2 (five innings) victories on Thursday.

In the first game, Anthony Sinicropi pitched the complete-game victory, striking out six in the process.

He also doubled. Noah Woods had a single and two RBIs. Isaac Schmitz added two singles and an RBI.

Gino Barber went the distance for the Panthers but took the loss. He walked a pair and struck out one.

During the second contest, Alec McBane got the win in four innings pitched. He walked two and struck out one. Schmitz tossed the final inning. Sinicroppi tallied two hits and two RBIs. Ryan Higgs tripled, singled and plated home three. McBane and George Ash also tallied an RBI each.

For Buckeye Local, Shayne Christian started and took the loss, walking one and striking out none. Alan Burkett pitched the final inning, walking two and striking out one. Both singled and drove home a run each.
