STEUBENVILLE -- Lynn Meyer has had a long career in the Ohio Valley as both an educator and an athletic director.
The head of Big Red athletics recently was recognized for her efforts, being named the Eastern Ohio Interschoolastic Athletic Administrators Association Athletic Director of the Year.
"It's fabulous because there are so many great athletic directors not only in the Eastern District, but across the state," Meyer said. "I have had great mentors. There are people out there that are probably more deserving than I am."
One thing that makes the award from the EOIAAA so special to Meyer is that it was chosen by her fellow athletic directors in the association.
"It's a great honor because it is chosen by your peers," Meyer said. "That is what it makes it special. It is absolutely something special because of that."
Meyer has been at Steubenville High School for the past nine years, serving the last seven as the athletic director, taking over for long-time coach Fred Heatherington after his retirement from the role.
She gave him a lot of credit for what he taught her in her time as his assistant before taking over.
"He taught me a lot of the ropes here and a lot about the tradition here," Meyer said. "Being at Big Red instills the love, tradition and pride."
In total, she has been in education for 39 years, spending the first 29 at Edison. She was the Wildcats' athletic director for two years before coming to Steubenville.
For Meyer, her career has always been about the student-athletes.
"It's shows that everything that you have been doing with your student athletes, with your school, trying to make everything better … is noticed," she said. "You want your student athletes to not only perform well here, but also as they go on to become young adults and productive out in the world."
