Redskins continue strong start, down Big Red, 55-17

WINTERSVILLE -- Indian Creek's suffocating defense stymied Steubenville's offense.
The Redskins forced 35 turnovers and limited Big Red to three points in the second half during a 55-17 victory in girls basketball action Monday night at home to remain undefeated on the season.
"Defensively, we like to get after it," Indian Creek (6-0) head coach Steve Eft said. "We want to put pressure on the other team's guards. The girls did a good job of that. Our rotations were really good.
"One thing I did not like was I did not think we did a good job rebounding. They got a lot of offensive rebounds. I did not like that. Overall, the girls gave a great effort."
Committing twice as many turnovers as points scored and being limited to single digits -- including one point in the third quarter -- during all four quarters is not a recipe for success.
"It's not," Big Red (2-3) head coach Jeff Lombardo said. "We are at two different points in the season with Indian Creek and ourselves. We are in a valley, while they are peaking. We have a lot of things to work on in order to get better, especially against a team like that."
The Redskins built a double-digit advantage early in the second quarter, and Indian Creek never looked back. The victors scored in double digits in three of the four quarters with the lone exception being the third when the hosts outscored the visitors, 7-1.
"We had a really good second quarter," Eft said. "We shot the ball well. In the third quarter, we got off to a slow start, but the girls did a good job of refocusing and playing hard again. They gave a great effort."
While Indian Creek shot the ball well, Big Red struggled to get into its offense and score points. The Redskins recorded 23 field goals, while Big Red made just seven.
"We are going to watch the film and see what happened," Lombardo said. "We are going to show the girls what they did right and what they need to work on at practice.
"It is a long season. There are going to be ups and downs. We are down right now. We are going to work hard to get back up again."
Four players produced at least nine points for the Redskins, including three who reached double digits. Ally Tweedy tallied a game-high 15 points, Kylie Kiger 13 and Makenzie Taylor 11. Also, Taylor Jones netted nine.
"They ran a 1-2-2 trap," Lombardo said. "We kind of worked on some things at the last minute to go up against it. They had success with it, so they stayed in it."
Madison Fields and Mary Marshall each delivered four points to lead Steubenville.
"Last year, they really slowed us down with their zone," Eft said. "We expected them to play zone again. We expected them to play a 2-3 zone, and we prepared for that. We moved the ball well. Last year, we did not attack the basket. This year, we focused on doing that. We wanted to attack the basket."
Fields scored the first points of the game, but after that it was all Indian Creek. The Redskins scored the next 13 points, and they took a 15-6 lead at the end of the first.
Indian Creek continued to shoot the ball well in the second quarter. The Redskins drained three 3-pointers -- two by Kiger -- to build a 31-12 lead.
Kylie Maxwell scored the last basket of the half to make the score 33-14 at the break, but Big Red did not make another field goal until Marshall scored the lone basket for her team in the fourth quarter to make it 42-17.
Big Red out-rebounded Indian Creek, 30-18. Fields finished with a game-high 10 rebounds. Abby Copeland and Taylor each pulled down four rebounds for Indian Creek.
"It was a great effort tonight," Eft said. "They brought a lot of energy to the court. They really wanted to win this game."
GAME NOTE
Big Red won the JV game, 27-13. Maxwell tallied a game-high eight points to lead the way for Big Red, while Mary Ballato collected seven for Indian Creek.
