Hernandez can earn bonuses
CLEVELAND -- Second baseman Cesar Hernandez can earn $250,000 in performance bonuses for plate appearances as part of his $6.25 million, one-year contract with the Cleveland Indians.
The 29-year-old would get $50,000 for 525 plate appearances and $100,000 each for 575 and 625 under the deal announced Dec. 29.
Hernandez had spent his entire professional career in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, but they declined to offer him a 2020 contract in his third year of arbitration eligibility. The switch-hitter batted .279 with 14 home runs and 71 RBIs last year.
Hernandez has a .277 career average with 46 homers in seven major league seasons. He has played in 161 games each of the past two years.
Cleveland sought a second baseman after declining a $16.5 million option on Jason Kipnis, who became a free agent.

WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump is planning to attend Monday's College Football Playoff National Championship in New Orleans.
The game features No. 1 Louisiana State University versus No. 3 Clemson, which is looking for its third national title in the last four seasons. Both teams are undefeated.
Trump has attended a handful of sports events in recent months, including Game 5 of the World Series, a college football showdown between LSU and Alabama, and the annual Army-Navy football game.
An administration official not authorized to publicly discuss the president's travel confirmed that he planned to attend next week's championship.
Browns interview Bills OC
CLEVELAND -- Brian Daboll spruced up his resume and improved as a coach since the previous time he was in Cleveland nearly a decade ago.
The Browns haven't changed much.
Daboll, who got his first offensive coordinator position in the NFL with the Browns under Eric Mangini, interviewed Monday for Cleveland's coaching job as one of the team's top candidates decided to go elsewhere.
After a one-day break, the Browns resumed their search by meeting with Daboll, who just completed his second season as Buffalo's offensive coordinator.
The 44-year-old Daboll is the fifth candidate to meet with the Browns' search committee led by owner Jimmy Haslam, who is trying to find the right coach after firing five since buying the team in 2012.
McCarthy new Dallas coach
DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Cowboys didn't take long to settle on Mike McCarthy as their coach after waiting a week to announce they were moving on from Jason Garrett.
McCarthy, who won a Super Bowl at the home of the Cowboys nine years ago as Green Bay's coach, agreed to become the ninth coach in team history, a person with direct knowledge of the deal said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hasn't announced the decision.
McCarthy interviewed during the weekend, before the Cowboys made the announcement Sunday that Garrett wouldn't return after 9¢ seasons. Dallas missed the playoffs at 8-8 with high expectations in a make-or-break season for Garrett, whose contract expires next week.
Phillips fired by Rams
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Veteran defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was fired by the Los Angeles Rams after three winning seasons.
Phillips announced on Twitter that the Rams are not renewing his contract, and the team later confirmed it. The 72-year-old former head coach of a record six NFL teams says he wants to stay in coaching.
The Rams finished 9-7 this season, missing the playoffs for the first time in Phillips' three-year partnership with Sean McVay. Although Phillips' distinctive 3-4 defense led b
Laviolette fired in Nashville
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- With the Predators struggling to keep pace in the playoff chase, Predators general manager David Poile fired coach Peter Laviolette despite winning a Presidents' Trophy and back-to-back Central Division titles.
Assistant coach Kevin McCarthy also was dismissed. The Predators (19-15-7) have dropped four of five heading into tonight's game against the Boston Bruins. They are 11th in the Western Conference standings with 45 points.
There was no word on a replacement for either coach, but the Predators scheduled a news conference for today.
The 55-year-old Laviolette, who at one point in his career coached the Wheeling Nailers, went 248-143-60 in 5 1/2 seasons with Nashville, reaching the playoffs each of his first five seasons.
