STEUBENVILLE — The Steubenville wrestling team put forth another strong performance against Weir High.

Big Red won 10 of the 14 weight classes en route to a 60-21 victory over the Red Riders during senior night on Wednesday inside the Crimson Center.

“We wrestled well,” Big Red head coach Mike Blackburn said. “It was a good way to finish our season at home. We still have some things to work on. We still have the Ohio Duals, and then we have Boardman and Barnesville before sectionals. We are going to keep working.”

There were six forfeits on the night, with Big Red receiving victories in five of them, and the hosts were victorious in five of the eight weight classes in which there were matches. All five of the victor’s victories came via pinfall.

Weir won two matches by pin, one by forfeit and one by decision.

“I am real proud of the kids and the way they wrestled,” Weir head coach Tom Taylor said. “We wrestled Steubenville a week ago. We won four matches tonight, so we did pretty well. We won more matches than we did last week.”

Big Red defeated Weir, 66-12, on Jan. 29 in the third-place match of the OVAC Bill Hinegardner Class 5A Dual Meet Wrestling Tournament at John Marshall.

“I thought we did better tonight,” Taylor said. “Tonight, we scored 21 points with one less kid. We had a boy get hurt last week. With one less kid, we scored more points. I am never happy with a loss, but I am happy with how we battled.”

Individually for Big Red, Anthony Shevlin (106 pounds) Aaron Ferguson (145), Collin Abbott (152), Ethan Pappas (160) and David Tuttle (182) all won by pinfall. Meanwhile, Anthony Hill (113), Kaiden Minella (120), Tyler Muldrew (138), Keith Bodnar (195) and Peyton Tuttle (220) all won by forfeit.

For Weir, Gage Hawkins (170) and Jordan Brueck (285) won by pin, Wyatt Conley (132) won by forfeit and Saiyan Page (126) picked up a victory by decision.

Big Red raced out to an 18-0 lead after three matches, as Shevlin pinned Daniel Kuhns in 39 seconds, with Hill and Minella tallying back-to-back victories by forfeit.

The Red Riders got onto the scoreboard when Page defeated James Still, 19-12. Page jumped out to a big lead in the match, but Still battled back and pulled within 11-9. However, Page regained control and went on to win the match by seven points to make the score 18-3.

Conley then picked up a forfeit victory to cut Weir’s deficit to 18-9.

Muldrew won via forfeit to start the winning streak, and then the home team won the next three matches by pinfall. First, Ferguson pinned Chase Willis in 1:18, then Abbott pinned Sean Baker in 1:18. Finally, Pappas pinned Owen Totten in 42 seconds to extend Big Red’s advantage to 42-9 and to wrap up the victory for his team.

Hawkins put an end to Big Red’s winning ways when he pinned Kellan Marshall in 4:38 to make the score 42-15, but Big Red won the next three weight classes to increase their advantage to 45 points.

David Tuttle collected a pinfall victory over Logan Walters in 2:54 to get the winning streak started, and then Bodnar and Peyton Tuttle picked up forfeit victories to make the score 60-15.

Brueck ended the night for the Red Riders on a positive note, as he pinned Spencer Ostovich in 5:47.

“For the most part, it went as expected,” Blackburn said about the match. “Spencer Ostovich at 220 wanted to jump up to heavyweight to take on Brueck, who was an OVAC placer. He wrestled pretty well despite giving up 60 pounds.”

MATCH NOTES

¯ Prior to the start of the match, Big Red honored their three seniors in David Tuttle, Bodnar and Still.

“David and Keith have started since they were freshmen,” Blackburn said. “You can not ask for better leaders. James Still works his butt off. All three have worked hard the last four years. It has been a pleasure coaching all three.”

¯ There were no JV matches.
