WEIRTON -- Weir High's Thomas DeVecchis dazzled during Saturday's 5-0 victory over Beaver Local with a no-hitter.
DeVecchis also walked a pair and struck out 10. At the plate, he tallied two singles.
Jack Scopel had the big bat with two singles and three RBIs. Trenton Taflan reached base all four times with a free pass, three singles and drove home a run. Tyler Kelly added a single and an RBI.
Brooke 6, Indian Creek 4
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke baseball team held off Indian Creek, 6-4, on Saturday.
Alex Jezierski picked up the W. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, four walks and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings. Andrew Coursin recorded the final two outs for the save, with one punch out.
At the dish, Braelynn Sperringer produced two singles, a triple and three RBIs. Charlie Fuscardo singled twice and drove home a pair. Coursin also had two base knocks with one run batted in.
For the Redskins, Hunter Rothacker took the loss in 3 2/3 innings pitched. He allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits, one walk and struck out five. Justice Morris allowed just one hit and struck out a pair over the final 2 1/3 innings.
Offensively, Aiden Orr and David Ferroni each tallied two singles, while Orr drove a run home. Corey Cottis singled and delivered a pair of RBIs. Isaiah Vandine added an RBI.
On Friday, the Bruins fell to University, 16-1.
Edison 4, Martins Ferry 3
MARTINS FERRY -- The Edison baseball squad tallied three runs in the seventh inning to shock Martins Ferry, 4-3, on Saturday.
Blake Connelly earned the win in the complete-game effort. He allowed three runs on eight hits, two walks and punched out four. Offensively, Matt Parsons doubled and drove home two runs Eli Wilson had two singles and one RBI. Connelly, Ian McBane and Cam Cooley produced two base knocks apiece.
On Friday, the Wildcats walked-off over Harrison Central, 2-1. Cooley went the distance for the victory, allowing one run on five hits, no walks and struck out four. Isaac Zastudil had two singles and one run batted in. Joey Booth singled and collected an RBI. Connelly added a pair of singles.
SOFTBALL
Oak Glen 9, Steubenville 4
STEUBENVILLE -- Oak Glen's Olivia Munoz rocketed a ninth-inning grand slam to lift her team to a 9-4 extra-inning victory over Steubenville on Saturday.
The Golden Bears scored five runs in the top of the ninth overall.
Maddie McKay, who tossed a no-hitter against Big Red a few weeks prior, picked up the victory in relief. She allowed one unearned run on two hits, no walks and struck out four. Lizzie Kell started and allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits, two walks and punched out five.
Offensively, Kell and Sydney Brown provided two singles and one RBI each. Amber Moore singled and doubled, while McKay also hit a two-bagger.
For Big Red, Amaria Swearengen pitched all nine frames but took the loss. She allowed five earned runs on 11 hits, five walks and struck out a pair. Hillary Rauch connected on a game-tying RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. She also singled and drove home two runs total. Mary Marshall singled twice, while Lakyn Blackburn had one.
Madonna splits a pair
BLACKSVILLE -- The Madonna softball team split a doubleheader with Clay-Battelle on Saturday.
In Game 1, the Blue Dons lost, 2-1. Landry Bone took the defeat despite striking out 13 batters. She also produced a double, while Maddie Daugherty had two singles.
Madonna's offense had a much better showing in the second contest for Bone with a 12-4 victory. Bone struck out seven batters, giving her 20 overall on the day. Offensively, she tallied a single and a triple. Daugherty had two more singles and a triple, while Carmela Pulice also hit a three-bagger.
Brooke dominates DH
BUCKHANNON -- The Brooke softball squad routed Buckhannon-Upshur twice on Saturday, 13-5 in six inning and 17-3 in five to remain perfect.
In Game 1, Alexa Foresha earned the victory. She allowed one earned run, three walks and stuck out six in four innings. Maleaha Misch came on in the fifth.
Offensively, Wyntar McQuistan had four singles and three RBIs. Foresha had three singles and three RBIs. Mandy Brown recorded a single, double and two RBIs. Angelina Lippoli doubled and brought home a pair of runs.
In the second contest, Misch earned the win in three inning pitched. She allowed three earned runs, one free pass and punched out four. Kirsten Parks tossed the final two frames and struck out two.
At the plate, Foresha doubled twice and drove home five. Misch had a pair of base knocks and two RBIs. Jaclin Headmond produced two singles and an RBI, as well as Kameryn Eckels. Emilee Knorr added two base hits.
Toronto sweeps East Liverpool
The Toronto softball team swept East Liverpool in a doubleheader Saturday, 11-0 and 6-3.
In Game 1, Riley Kinsey picked up the victory, allowing two hits and striking out five. Maddie Anderson singled, cranked a home run and drove home two. Bri Burruss had three singles and three runs batted in. Emma Henry had two singles and one RBI.
In the second contest, Burruss went six innings for the win. She allowed three runs and struck out four. Kinsey tossed the final frame for the save, striking out one. At the dish, Michelle Anderson plated a run home, singled and doubled. Jenna Anderson produced a pair of base knocks and one RBI. Abby Liddick and Henry evenly divided four singles.
