Four area players make East District first team
Central coach Jess Looman recognized at Division IV Co-Coach of the Year
LOOMAN
Four players from the Herald-Star/Daily Times coverage area, two boys and two girls, earned a spot on the all-district first team, while one local coach took the top honors for a bench boss as the Ohio Prep Sports Writers Association released its annual East District awards.
Catholic Central coach Jess Looman, who guided the Crusaders to their first OVAC title in more than three decades and reached the 100-career win mark during a stellar 18-5 campaign, was named the girls Division IV Co-Coach of the Year along with Bishop Rosecrans’ Vince Tolson.
“Receiving this recognition truly is a humbling experience,” Looman said. “It caught me totally off guard and I’m very appreciative. The Eastern District has some great coaches who do outstanding work with their teams year in and year out.
“I’m fortunate to have two great assistants (Natasha Canella and Ed Looman) and they certainly deserve to share in this recognition. We had quite a ride this season and exceeded expectations. We had 12 girls total and just six were in our varsity rotation. The success we had as a coaching staff is directly related to the hard work our girls put in and the effort they gave us each time they stepped on the floor.
“I told the girls all the time that I am lucky to be their coach and was privileged to have been able to share in all their successes this season.”
The standout senior leader of Looman’s team, Katie Zatta, was among the four players from the area to land a spot on the first team in their respective division. Also on the girls side, Harrison Central standout senior McKayla Dunkle earned a first-team nod in Division III, while on the boys side decorated Toronto senior Shane Keenan is a first-teamer in Division IV, as is Huskies young gun sophomore Hayden Cassidy.
All in all, 17 local players were awarded the title all-district landing on a first, second or third team.
GIRLS
DIVISION II
While no local players cracked the first team on the girls side in Division II, Indian Creek freshmen McKenna Scott (12.5 points per game) made the second team, while teammate Kylie Anderson, a sophomore that averaged 11 points per game, and Big Red sophomore sharpshooter Madalyn Criss (10.8 PPG) earned spots on the third team.
Big Red’s Lexi Martin and Aniyah Warner garnered special mention recognition, while teammates Sabria Jones and Paige Matteson along with Creek’s Abby Starkey are honorable mentions.
Lexi Howe, a junior standout from Tri-Valley, is the division’s player of the year, while John Glenn coach Gary Sigman took coach of the year.
DIVISON III
Dunkle, who finished the season averaging 17.7 points and a double-double, was a 1,200-career point scorer that also had more than 900-career rebounds for the Huskies and represents the area on the first team. She will continue her career collegiately at Mount Union.
“It finished a stellar career for her,” Huskies coach Nick Yourkovich said. “She is very deserving of this, I’m not sure we win very many games the last couple of years without her. It was fun to coach her. She was real easy to coach, she took everything I threw at her … she took it all in stride and was a player that relayed my thoughts to everybody else so my message got through.
“Players like her don’t come around too often, and sometimes I took her for granted because she was so consistently great. Our program is definitely going to miss her on and off the court.”
Edison senior Alysea Fiedorczyk, who helped lead the Wildcats to a solid season, averaging 14.3 points, landed on the second team, while teammates Gracie Fox, Savanna Ankrom and Alayna Meadows are each a special mention.
The Huskies’ Maddy Butler and Buckeye Local’s Emily Valuska are honorable mentions in the division.
Union Local’s Torre Kildow and Fort Frye’s Hannah Archer are co-players of the year, while the Jets Scotter Tolzda and Hiland’s Jason Mishler share coach of the year honors.
DIVISION IV
Zatta’s stellar senior campaign during which she set the school record for 3-pointers and topped the 1,000-point mark for her career, landed her on the first team.
Zatta has not committed as of yet but looks to continue her career at the collegiate level.
“Katie’s accomplishments on the court the past two seasons speak for themselves,” said Looman. “She worked extremely hard during both the season and the off-season to improve her game. It wasn’t unusual for her to work her tail off during one of our practices then go straight to her private coach for more work.
“I couldn’t be more happy for her. She finished with 1,142 points and 881 of those came during her junior and senior years. Katie and our other senior Clara (Symington) really stepped up and provided our team with senior leadership on and off the court. I’m confident Katie has the skills to compete at the next level and I hope she has that opportunity.
“I’m sure Katie is proud of the individual accolades she is receiving but she’s equally as proud of what our team accomplished during the season. She knows that without the contributions of her teammates, the personal milestones she reached would not have been possible.”
Toronto sophomore Ashton Thomas (9.8 points) earned a spot on the third team, while the Crusaders’ Therese Kerker, Ellen Rohde and Symington, as well as the Red Knights’ Abby Liddick, are honorable mentions.
With five players, including Zatta, averaging more than 17 points per game in the division, Monroe Central’s Kalista Friday and Bishop Rosecrans’ Jenna Carlisle emerged from a crowded field of deserving players to share player of the year honors.
BOYS
Division II
Committed to walk on at Ohio State for football, Big Red senior Brenten “Inky” Jones showed he was a force on the court, too, earning second team honors while averaging 14.1 points per game.
Teammate, junior Phaeton Hill (15.4 PPG), isa third team selection, as was Indian Creek junior Logan Schaffer (13.8 PPG).
Logan Kuczykowski and Mitch Williams gave the Redskins two special mentions, a list that also included Steubenville’s Ivan Buggs.
Big Red’s Ty Pierce and Frankie Vostatek are honorable mentions.
Meadowbrook’s Nate Singleton was the player of the year, while East Liverpool’s Nate Conley took coach of the year honors.
DIVISION III
Cassidy averaged 18 points per game for coach Justin Clifford’s team to earn a spot on the first team as only a sophomore.
Buckeye Local senior Cameron Best tallied 12.6 per game to land on the second team, while the Huskies’ Jace Madzia (14.6 PPG) and Edison’s Tremendous West (14.5 PPG) each are members of the third team.
The Huskies’ Jonathan Vermillion, the Panthers Luke Darrah and the Wildcats’ Dakota Coil each are honorable mentions.
Tuscarawas Valley’s Logan Stotzer is the player of the year in the division, while Bellaire’s J.R. Battista and Garaway’s Terry Rowe are co-coaches of the year.
DIVISION IV
Shane Keenan wrapped up a stellar athletic career at Toronto with a strong senior season on the hardwood. The Youngstown State football commit averaged 19.1 points per game for coach Sean Tucker’s young club and provided a lot of leadership.
“Shane was a three-year letterman for us and battled adversity each year of his high school career,” Tucker said. “He broke one foot one season, then the other the following year, then, going into his senior year, he broke his leg and came back out and just totally dominated.
“More than that, he was just a true leader for our guys, especially our young guys. He definitely led by example. For what he averaged, and what he could have averaged, the kid devoted himself every single night wanting the guys around him to be better and was always looking to involve everyone else, that is the type of kid he is.
“He is one of those kids you want to have in your program, because you know he is going to give you everything that he’s got. He’s extremely respectful and comes from a great family. It was an honor to be able to coach him.”
His Red Knights teammate Kamryn Baker (12.8 PPG), a sophomore, and Catholic Central junior Andrew Dorsey (10.9 PPG) landed on the third team.
The Crusaders” Daniel Bolster, Benji Rook and Tommy Pergi are each an honorable mention.
Caldwell record-setter Bede Lori is the division’s player of the year, while River’s Mark Romick takes coach of the year honors.
