Meyer leads Central past Creek

WINTERSVILLE -- When a team needs to bounce back, its leaders are usually who a coach turns to lead the way.
The Catholic Central girls soccer coach Jonathan Hoover has a pretty good leader in All-Ohioan Maria Meyer, and she did her part and then some to get the Crusaders back on track Monday night.
Meyer, a senior and one of Central's captains, recorded a hat trick in a 5-0 victory over Indian Creek at Kettlewell Stadium to snap a three-game skid and get the Crusaders (5-3) back in the win column.
"We had three straight losses coming into this and we were looking to get back on track and get things rolling," Hoover said. "Maria Meyer played fantastic, is a big contributor to our offense and got us moving along. I'm very happy with the effort the girls gave for 80 minutes.
"Maria is a very special player. I kind of feel like she is a good driving force for us and we want to see her keep being successful as the season goes on."
After a scoreless first 23-plus minutes, Meyer broke through to open the scoring with just under 17 minutes to go in the opening half, getting in close and maneuvering through Redskins (1-6) defenders.
Ellen Rhode fired a free kick into the net with a little more than five minutes before halftime to make it 2-0 Central at the break, then Meyer scored her second and third goals of the night in the second half, an early goal from in close and a late goal from distance and a tough angle, with a goal from Sophia Walsh in between.
"It's very nice to get back in the win column, especially with the OVACs coming up, we need to get as many points as we can," Hoover said. "We felt like we gave one away on Saturday, so its nice for us to bounce back and get right back on track and headed in the right direction."
After hanging with the Crusaders early, things just seemed to get away from Creek as the game wore on.
"We were a little too inconsistent," Indian Creek coach Cate Calissie said. "It's not that we don't want it, we do, we're just not quite at the nect level to compete (with a team a team like Central). It takes a lot of mental toughness to stay in a game like that when maybe you're discouraged."
