Red Riders get big win on the road
FARMINGTON -- The Weir High boys basketball team stayed hot and earned its ninth win in the last 11 games by getting a big win for sectional seeding on the road at Section 1 opponent North Marion on Saturday, 59-53.
The win came less than 24 hours after the now 10-6 Red Riders won the City Championship over Madonna on Friday.
After opening an 18-15 lead after one, Weir outscored the Huskies 15-4 in the second to pull away, then held off the hosts in the second half.
Colin "G" Cross led the way with 22 points for Weir High, while Damarr Turner netted 12 and Justin Brueck finished with 10.
Brooke boys top Magnolia
NEW MARTINSVILLE -- The Brooke boys basketball team topped Magnolia on Saturday in the Rotary Classic, 68-58.
Peyton Toepher led the Bruins with 28 points, while Leyton Toepher tallied 18 points and dished six assists and Nick Cipoletti netted 15 points.
Brooke girls win at Preston
PRESTON -- The Brooke girls basketball team defeated Preston on the road on Saturday, 53-39.
The Bruins were led by five 3-pointers from Rylee Schwertfeger, who finished with a game-high 18 points.
Ava Bolen followed close behind with 17 points.
Central falls at Minerva
MALVERN -- A big fourth quarter lifted Malvern to a 46-35 victory over Catholic Central Saturday.
The Hornets, now 12-6, led 32-29 after three quarters before outscoring the Crusaders 14-6 during the final eight minutes to earn a split of the season series.
Maddie Powers paced Malvern with 17 points. Emma Debo added 13 and Alyssa Boni 10.
For Central, now 7-10, Theresa Kerker and Ella Maragos had 10 points each.
The Crusaders travel to Shenandoah today for OVAC consolation play.

Third-Fourth Place
Bellaire 55, Indian Creek 49
The host Big Reds made it two wins in a row after their six-game skid with a victory against the Redskins.
Junior Mayson Sochor was once again impressive, scoring 23 points. Mac Mac Pettigrew and Jakob Dowling each had 10.
Indian Creek was paced by Lucca Morelli's 14 and Drake Freshwater's 13.
Seventh-Eighth Place
St. Clairsville 86, Edison 38
The Red Devils raced to a 29-9 lead after one and never looked back en route to a convincing win in the ninth and 10th place game.
Sophomore Tyson Pastor led the scoring with 22 points, while junior Cole Thoburn and freshman Kaden Clifford each had 14. Sophomore Brody Schafer added 10.
Edison received 21 points from Braydon Moses.

Local winners at Panther Classic
CONNORVILLE -- Indian Creek's C.J. Spencer, who captured the 150-pound title, and Edison's Gabriel Glen (285) topped the podium Saturday at the annual Panther Classic at Buckeye Local.
