Oak Glen’s Davis sets record, pins down state title

HUNTINGTON -- Some records are meant to be broken.
Oak Glen's Logan Davis did just that Saturday night as he became the first Oak Glen wrestler to record 50 wins in a single season. The Golden Bears' 113-pound junior picked up the record-breaker while capturing the Class A/AA state championship as the 76th annual W.Va. state wrestling tournament concluded its three-night stand inside Mountain Health Arena.
Davis, now a sparkling 50-1, pinned East Fairmont's Xaden Willett in 2-minutes, 31-seconds. He was leading 5-0 when the pin occurred.
"I don't think it has sunk in yet, but when I get my trophy it will," Davis said.
With the 50th victory safely tucked away, Davis said he isn't finished yet.
"I broke one of Peyton's records two weeks ago at the regional and I broke another today," he noted. "I plan on breaking some more, too."
Losing in the final last year was a factor in Saturday's match.
"Not to start out slow. Just go after it. It's just a match. You've got nothing to lose," he said of what he learned from last year.
Davis is steadily climbing the ladder as he was third as a freshman at 106 and runner up last year.
He is now 112-5 for his career, which has another chapter to be written.
"We're excited about having Logan for another year," Oak Glen first-year head coach Josh Cornell said. "He's one of those kids that works so hard, it good to see all that hard work pay off."
Hayden Lamb, just a sophomore, didn't fare as well as he was taken down by Pt. Pleasant sophomore Gunner Andrick and put right on his back for a 19-second fall. Andrick is now a two-time state champ, having won last year at 126.
Lamb finished at 33-10 and is 68-28 in two seasons. He was fifth at 113 a year ago.
Oak Glen had five placers in addition to Davis and Lamb.
Senior Braxton Dlugopolski (165) finished third. Freshman Wyatt Wolanski (120) was fourth. Placing sixth were freshman Aiden Anderson (106), junior Michael Heath (157) and sophomore Greg Sauers (190). Dlugopolski ended at 44-6; Wolanski 24-13; Anderson 34-16; Heath 41-14 and Sauers 39-15.
The Golden Bears finished fifth with 117 points.
"We brought eight wrestlers thinking they all could place, but we got seven of them on the podium," Cornell said. "We wrestled well as a team. There were some matches that could've went our way that didn't, but that's wrestling."
Weir junior Shawn Young (144) was sixth. He was 36-12 on the season.
In class AAA, Brooke's Tyler Wise (190) placed third. He finished 31-3.
