Creek responds, fends off Brooke

WINTERSVILLE -- The Indian Creek softball team has been put in a couple situations where it has needed to respond this past week.
The most recent was Thursday evening when Brooke rallied back from down seven to pull within two. Once again, though, coach Angie Penner's squad had the needed answer, tacking on some insurance runs to put away a 12-7 victory and improve to 7-0.
"When it looks like the opposing team is creeping in, we battle," Penner said. "We responded, we've responded in a couple game in a row now. Our kids have been playing seven innings of ball and I have to give them credit for not getting down (when the other team rallies) and finishing seven innings strong.
"Right now we're playing really good ball, hopefully we keep it going."
The Redskins started off firing on all cylinders, plating three in the first and four in the second to open a 7-0 lead.
After both sides put up a couple zeroes, Brooke (2-8) plated three in the top of the fifth to get within four, then, after Creek added a pair in the bottom half, the Bruins plated four in the top of the sixth to get within 9-7.
Creek, though, tacked on three in the bottom half and Trintiy Taylor closed out a save with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh to seal the win.
"We cut the deficit down and made it closer, but we weren't able to overcome it," Brooke head coach Tom Diserio said. "We struggle to put more than two innings together at a time. We were looking at the stats and we've out-hit our opponents in all but one game, but one bad inning cripples us."
McKenna Scott struck out four in five-plus innings for Creek to get the win, her second of the season in as many starts, while Taylor earned her first save to go with five victories of her own, also striking out four in two innings.
Both were also key at the plate. Taylor went 3 for 3, all triples, with four RBIs, while Scott, who was 4 for 4 the night before at Edison, went 2 for 4 with a triple of her own and drove in a run.
Alexis Dawson also plated four with a double and a single. Eight different players recorded a hit for Creek.
"Everybody is contributing," Penner said. "We're making some nice plays defensively behind our pitchers. Everyone is hitting the ball really well. Our pitchers are working really hard … Everyone is contributing and working hard and I can't ask for any more than that."
Jazmyn Wood and Lex Foresha each had a pair of hits and two RBIs for the Bruins. Landry Bone drove in a run and had two hits while recording five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of relief work in the circle.
