Madonna pulls away late to win city championship

WEIRTON -- The Madonna baseball team plated five runs in the top of the seventh inning to break the tie and pull away from Weir High for a 10-5 victory in the annual city championship game.

Jacob Lazear plated the go-ahead run to break what was a 5-5 tie with a sac fly, then Marques Parker doubled in a run, Brycen Hair singled in another, a Red Riders' error allowed another to score off a Grant Wilharm fly ball and Luke Amaismeier, who also had an RBI in the sixth, singled in another run to conclude the outburst.

Chase Littleton had a two-run single in the fifth to help the Blue Dons open a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth.

Weir High battled back, though, Colin "G" Cross hitting an RBI double and Colson Kimmel an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to answer, then a Blue Don error allowed two runs to cross for the Red Riders to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth.

The Blue Dons, though, had another answer.

Wilharm worked 5 1/3 innings on the mound for the Dons, striking out three, while Parker threw 1 2/3 and did not allow a run while fanning two.

Weir High's Ryan Weber went five innings, allowing just one earned run.

Both teams committed three errors.
