WELLSBURG — Officials with Brooke County Schools has announced the hiring of a new athletic director, Bill Garvey.
A native of Long Island, N.Y., Garvey was employed previously at Bethany College, where he served as head football coach for nine seasons and assistant coach for seven seasons.
Prior to that, he held assistant football coaching positions at Harvard University for four years as well as Stonehill College in Massachusetts, Hofstra University, and Delaware State University.
A football player in high school and at Iona College in Rochelle, N.Y., he was a wide receiver and defensive back.
Superintendent Jeffrey Crook said, “With over 20 years of competitive coaching experience and extensive facility management skills, Mr. Garvey will be a wealth of knowledge and dedication to our athletic programs.
He added, “We are confident that his leadership and expertise will support our student-athletes in achieving their future potential both on and off the field.”
Garvey said his friendship with former Bethany Bison coach Tim Weaver brought him to Brooke County, and he has loved living there.
He added he is enjoying his new administrative role and working in the Brooke County school district.
“The reason I took this job is Dr. Crook’s vision of what he wants us to do and how to succeed,” said Garvey, who noted the community’s long support for the high school’s athletic programs, particularly football.
“There’s a lot of pride, no question,” he said.
