Red Riders top Fairmont
WEIRTON -- The top-seeded Weir High softball team opened its run the Class AA Region 1, Section 1 tournament on Saturday with a 9-1 victory at home over No. 4 Fairmont Senior.
Phia Aperfine had a double, triple and two RBIs and Eliza Utt had a double, two singles and two RBIs to lead the offense.
Utt tossed a total of three scoreless innings, the first two and the fifth, fanning six and walking just one.
Riley Donaldson had three strikeouts in her two innings in the circle.
The Red Riders host No. 2 Oak Glen today.
Golden Bears top North Marion
NEW MANCHESTER -- Oak Glen carried its winning streak into tournament time as the No. 2 seed Golden Bears blanked No. 3 North Marion 8-0 Saturday at the Field of Dreams Complex.
Sydney Brown had a double and a single, Lizzie Kell had three hits and an RBI, Sarah Brown tripled and plated a run and Liv Munoz went 4 for 4 with five RBIs for Oak Glen.
Kell tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout, striking out 15 batters without issuing a walk.
Madonna stays alive in Class A
The Madonna softball team won a pair of games in the losers bracket to stay alive after dropping its tournament opener.
After falling at Magnolia on Thursday, the Blue Dons topped Paden City 6-3 on Friday at home and rallied to top Cameron 5-4 on Saturday to advance to Monday's losers bracket final against Magnolia on the road today.
In the win over Paden City, Chloe Orrecchio had a double and Kendal Ryan struck out five in the circle.
Ryan had a double and tossed another complete game against Cameron.

SOFTBALL
Big Red wins a pair at Edison
RICHMOND -- Competing in Edison's Dave Grimm Invitational, Big Red turned in a pair of strong victories on Saturday.
Steubenville blanked Edison 16-0 in the early game.
Sena Smith hit a homer and had a single and three RBIs, Sagan Smarrella was 3 for 4 with five RBIs, Emily Tuttle had a double, two hits and four RBIs and Paige Matteson doubled and drove in two runs.
Jules King, who also had two hits, struck out nine in four innings in the circle and Katie Renforth fired a scoreless fifth.
Allie Shrieve had a double and Pam Johnson a single for the Wildcats.
Big Red finished the day with a 10-0 win over Indian Valley.
King fired a no-hitter, striking out nine more batters. She was also 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs at the plate.
Smith was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Smarrella also plated a run.
In its other game of the day, Edison dropped a close 3-2 decision to Indian Valley.
BASEBALL
Red Knights edge Columbiana
TORONTO -- The Toronto baseball team added a win to its resume on Saturday edging out visiting Columbiana 2-1 in extra innings.
Zane Kinsey and Cole Barcus each had a single and an RBI for the Red Knights, while Aiden Filby went all nine innings on the mount with 12 strikeouts.
Creek pulls away from Madonna
WEIRTON -- The Indian Creek baseball team exploded for 10 runs in the third inning to pull away from Madonna on the road on Saturday for a 13-1 victory.
Aiden Orr had two home runs and six RBIs and Sal Barcalow had a homer, three hits and four RBIs for Creek.
Nick Maurer had a double, single and an RBI, and Silas Hyde fanned six batters in five innings on the mound.
Kolton Grishkevich had a double and an RBI for the Blue Dons.
Edison tops Buckeye Local
RICHMOND -- The Haught's combined on the mound to shutout the Panthers as Edison took a 6-0 victory over visiting Buckeye Local at home on Saturday.
Brayden Moses had a double and a single, Matt Parsons had a triple, single and two RBIs and Liam Watson doubled in a run for the Wildcats.
Skyler Ebright had a pair of hits for the Panthers.
Jefferson Christian wins two
MINGO JUNCTION -- The Jefferson County Christian baseball team won a pair of games on Saturday.
The Royals edged Bridgeport 6-5 in the morning.
Lee Gump was the winning pitcher going five innings and Luccas McMasters fired two scoreless innings in relief.
Gump and Jake Freeman had two hits and two RBIs.
In the second game, JCC run-ruled Tusky Valley 14-4 in five innings.
Wyatt Hervey had three singles and four RBIs and Mason Gump was the winning pitcher.
