Big Red wrestling places fourth in the Park Duals
TRIADELPHIA — After a 5-0 showing on the first day of competition, reigning duals champion University carried over their strong performance into the second day of the Wheeling Park Duals from Highlands Sports Complex, finishing in first place across 16 qualifying teams.
The University Hawks went 4-0 Thursday, preserving an undefeated trip up north and a finish atop a field from teams spanning three different states.
Following University was Peter’s Township from Pennsylvania, and Waynedale from Apple Creek, Ohio.
Steubenville Big Red came in fourth place, going 2-2 on Thursday after going 5-0 on Wednesday. Ringgold, another Pennsylvania school, rounded out the top five.
After going undefeated on Day 1, Big Red was 2-2 on the second day with wins over Loveland and Woodrow Wilson, while falling to Peters Township in the semifinals and Waynedale in the third-place match.
Individually for Big Red, Cooper Smith, Brody Saccoccia and Savier Faulks finished the tournament with 9-0 records, while Cal Beadling and Landon Crosier finished the two-day event 8-1.
32 teams in total competed at the 33rd annual Wheeling Park Duals wrestling tournament, four going undefeated in the first day — University, Steubenville, Waynedale, Woodrow Wilson, and Peter’s Township. Woodrow Wilson finished seventh at the end of the duals.
Oak Glen went 4-0 in day two after a 3-2 Wednesday to finish the duals in ninth.
Wheeling Park finished in 12 out of the 16 qualifying teams, going 1-3 Thursday and 4-5 in total.
Non-qualifying local teams included East Liverpool (2-3 Wednesday, 2-1 Thursday), Southern Local (1-4 Wednesday, 1-2 Thursday), Shenandoah (0-5 Wednesday, 1-2 Thursday), Indian Creek (2-3 Wednesday, 0-3 Thursday), Brooke (1-4 Wednesday, 1-2 Thursday), and John Marshall (1-4 Wednesday, 1-1 Thursday).
Local teams will stay busy on the mats going into the weekend, with the Brecksville Invitational, St. Clairsville Tournament and Newark Catholic Invitational set to feature teams from the area across Friday and Saturday.
