Big Red pulls away in the fourth quarter
Key 16-1 run gives Steubenville a road win, season sweep of Weir High

WEIRTON -- After getting a dramatic overtime win over Weir High at home a couple weeks ago, Big Red took a different path to victory over the Red Riders on the road Thursday,
After leading much of the first three quarters, Steubenville responded to a Weir High rally with a big fourth quarter run to pull away for good on the way to a season sweep of the Red Riders with a 66-52 triumph.
"It was a little less stressful than the first one," Big Red head coach Mike Haney said. "In the third quarter they came back and hit some shots and made it a little stressful, but our guys responded, kept fighting and kept playing.
"In the fourth quarter I think we showed good conditioning and were able to go full court, put some pressure on and create turnovers."
After the host Red Riders rallied from eight points down in the third quarter to tie it and Big Red holding a narrow one-point lead going to the fourth quarter, Steubenville (5-4) went on a 16-1 run that all but put things away.
"Our guys really took care of the ball better in the second half," Haney said. "We shared the ball better, guys were moving and getting layups.
"Everybody did something, everybody contributed. It was a total team win."
Weir High (3-8) could not seem to buy a bucket during the game-deciding run while miscues and points the other way added up.
"Our turnovers and second-chance points are what hurt us," Weir High head coach Anthony Santangelo said. "If you're not rebounding and turning it over, you're going to lose games off of it. We need to do better in those two categories.
"We've got to keep working and keep learning. Big Red played a good game. We gave them too many easy layups and the second chance points killed us all night."
Santino Haney led Big Red with 23 points, while Keith Lewis had a big night with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Colin "G" Cross had a game-high 24 for Weir to go with five rebounds and four assists, while Malachi Stromile hit three triples and netted 11 points.
Big Red also won the jayvee contest, 49-37, led by 13 points from Michael Casinelli. Weir's Justin Kaczmarek netted 16.
