Patriot Prep spoils Cross’ milestone
TORONTO — G Cross eclipsed a milestone for the Weir boys basketball team, however, Patriot Prep was able to spoil his and the Red Riders’ day.
Cross scored a game-high 27 points, while passing the 1,000 point plateau for his career, however, one big run made the difference as the Eagles came away with a 49-40 in the 4th Annual Todd Kalivoda Holiday Classic Saturday afternoon inside the George J. Kunzler Memorial Gymnasium.
“We could not make shots,” Weir (2-5) head coach Anthony Santangelo said.
The Red Riders collected the first four points of the fourth quarter to pull within 31-30, however, the invaders from Franklin County tallied the next 11 to build a 42-30 advantage.
Cross hit one from beyond the arc to pull the Red Riders to within 45-40 with 42.3 seconds left to play, but that is as close as it got as Patriot Prep produced the final points of the game to account for the final margin of victory.
The Eagles ended up outscoring the Red Riders, 30-20, in the second half to rally from a one-point deficit at halftime.
“They are a good team,” Santangelo said. “They are patient. We did not go away, but we had too many turnovers. Turnovers hurt us.”
The win was Patriot Prep’s second in less than 24 hours as the team defeated Toronto, 56-49, Friday night.
“We watched them play last night,” Santangelo said. “Toronto played mostly zone. They have a good big, and two very good guards.
“We did not execute. We did not hit shots. You are not going to win if you don’t hit shots.”
Cross was the lone player for Weir to reach double digits in points. He was the only one to score more than four points.
Dominic Sammons scored a team-high 23 points to lead the way for the Eagles.
Patriot Prep built a 9-4 lead in the first quarter, and a 3-pointer by Sammons at the buzzer have the victors a 15-7 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Red Riders came alive in the second. Weir outscored Patriot Prep, 13-4, in the quarter to take a 20-19 lead at halftime.
In the second, Cross drained a 3-pointer from the corner with 2:25remaining in the first half to pull his team to within 19-18. The basket also enabled Cross to reach the 1,000 point mark for his career.
“It is fantastic,” Santangelo said about Cross scoring his 1,000th point. “He is a guy who has worked hard since his freshman year. I am excited to be a part of his 1,000th point, but I just wish he could have done it at home.”
Cross was named Weir’s MVP, while Sammons received the honor for Patriot Prep.
“I want to thank Coach Tucker for inviting us to this tournament,” Santangelo said.
Weir is scheduled to play rival Brooke Friday night at home inside the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse.
Philo pulls away from Edison
TORONTO –The Edison boys basketball team ran out of gas.
After pulling within six points in the third quarter, Edison was outscored 19-2 the rest of the way as Philo pulled away for a 64-41 victory in the 4th Annual Todd Kalivoda Holiday Classic Saturday morning inside the George J. Kunzler Memorial Gymnasium.
The Wildcats were held to just two points in the fourth quarter — with that basket coming right at the end of the game.
“It was a combination of things,” Edison (3-6) head coach Jeremy Matics said about his team’s difficulty scoring points. “They jumped on us to start the game and in the third quarter. In the second half, we just could not put the ball in the basket.”
The Electrics outscored the Wildcats by 12 points in the fourth to break the game open.
The visitors from Muskingum County built a 19-8 lead at the end of the first, however, the boys from Jefferson County battled back as the boys in blue led by just two points at halftime.
The victors outscored Edison, 18-11, in the third to take a 50-39 lead into the fourth.
“We got a good look at them,” Matics said. “They are young. They did the little things, and we did not do the little things.”
Freshman Rusty Trout collected a game-high 19 points to lead the way offensively for Philo, while Drew Wright tallied 15.
JD Henderson delivered a team-high 15 points to lead the way for Edison. Henderson made five 3-pointers to account for all of his points. Bryce Rogers and Kyle Long each ended up with seven.
Trout was named Philo’s MVP, while Henderson received the honor for the Wildcats.
“JD played well,” Matics said. “He’s young. I’m happy with where he is at. We just have to come together as a team.”
Edison is scheduled to play Southern Local Tuesday at home.
