Big Red grad Sylvia Crawley Spann entering Ohio Basketball HOF

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame recently announced that former Big Red standout Sylvia Crawley Spann will be inducted into the 2024 Class, joining an elite group of basketball legends. The induction ceremony will take place on April 20 at 4 p.m. at the Hilton Columbus/Polaris, located at 8700 Lyra Dr.

Sylvia Crawley Spann’s basketball journey began at Steubenville High School, where she showcased her exceptional skills. During her senior season in 1990, she averaged an impressive 17.9 points and 19.4 rebounds per game. Her outstanding performance caught the attention of the University of North Carolina, where she continued to excel on the court.

At UNC, Sylvia had a stellar college career, accumulating 1,158 points, 582 rebounds, 124 blocks, and 98 steals. Her exceptional talent and dedication led the team to the NCAA Division I National Championship during her senior season. She left an indelible mark on the university, with her No. 00 jersey being retired in her honor in 2000.

Crawley Spann’s basketball prowess extended far beyond the college level. She went on to play professionally in 16 different countries, achieving great success. As a Silver and multiple Gold Medalist, she proudly represented the United States in various international competitions, including the Jones Cup, Select Team, Pan American Games, and World University Games.

Notably, Sylvia was a trailblazer in women’s basketball, joining the first independent women’s basketball league, the American Basketball League. Her exceptional skills were showcased when she won the inaugural women’s Slam Dunk Contest, astonishing the audience with a perfect score of 100 while executing a blindfolded dunk.

Aside from her achievements on the court, Sylvia Crawley Spann is a licensed minister, motivational speaker, and clothing designer. Her multifaceted talents and unwavering dedication continue to inspire basketball enthusiasts worldwide.

The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame is honored to recognize Sylvia Crawley Spann’s remarkable contributions to the game. Sheila Fox, the Executive Director of the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame, expressed her enthusiasm about Sylvia’s induction, stating, “Sylvia’s accomplishments both in the United States and abroad have solidified her position as a basketball icon. We are excited to celebrate her induction into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame.”
