ROMNEY -- The Weir High boys basketball team's season came to a close Wednesday night with a 52-39 loss at Hampshire in the Class AAA Region 1 co-finals.
A 19-point fourth quarter allowed the hosts to pull away in what had been a low-scoring contest. The game was tied 5-5 after one and was knotted at 12-12 at halftime before the Trojans pulled ahead by seven after three and pulled away further in the fourth.
Colin "G" Cross led the Red Riders with 24 points, while Damir Mowder added eight.
Weir wraps up the season with a mark of 10-15, while Hampshire (14-10) advances to the state tournament.
Wednesday was the final game for Red Riders seniors Cross, Malachi Stromile and Christian Long.
"Christian Long gave his all for all four years," Santangelo said. "Love the kid. He would do anything for the program and what the coaches said. He was a great teammate and student athlete to coach.
"Malachi Stromile never stopped. He has the biggest heart when it comes to sports and just wants to win. He was great to have all four years and got better year in and year out. He brought it every day at practice and it showed on the court.
"G Cross has been playing varsity since a freshman. The kid was always willing to go hard and fight for everything he got. It was fun coaching him day in and day out. He got better every year whether it was defensively or offensively. Every year it showed he worked on his game. He gave up a lot to get where he got and that's what everyone needs to do. G had an attitude to want to be the best and you have to have a swagger like that to achieve your goals. He scored over 1,000 points. It was a pleasure having a great player like him to coach.
"I'm proud on what they accomplished in their four years at Weir High and I wish them the best in the future."
