Local wrestlers win on opening day of districts
GALIA -- Local wrestlers that qualified for the Division II district tournament took to the mats Friday at Gallia Academy with the goal of earning spots in the state tournament.
Action started Friday and was set to continue on Saturday, incluing the finals.
Still alive for a district title after Day 1 for Big Red are Cal Beadling (138) who reached the semifinals with a pair of pins, Cooper Smith (144) who earned a pair of pins to reach the semis, Brody Saccoccia (150) with a pin and major decision, Savier Faulks (157) winner by pin and major decision.
Julias Mullins dropped an opening round match at 126 but stayed alive with a win in the consolation bracket. as did Landon Crosier at 165 and Noah West at 190.
Indian Creek's Gavin Pownall (157) split his matches and headed to the consolation bracket, while Elijah Llewellyn dropped his opening match but won to stay alive in the consolations at 165, while Luke McMillion won in the opening round but in the quarters at 190.
Buckeye Local's Shawn Jordan dropped a close 2-0 decision in the opening round at 106 but won a consolation match to stay alive., as did Denvar Nelson at 175. Chase McFadden is alive for a title after a pin and a decision at 215. Brendon Stillion won his opener at 285 but fell in the quarters to head to the consolation bracket.
Weir falls in a close one
FARMINGTON -- The Weir High boys basketball team dropped a tough 66-65 decision in the WVSSAC Class AAA Region 1, Section 1 final on Friday night at top-seeded North Marion.
The Red Riders were led by G Cross with 24 points, while Malchi Stromile tallied 17 poimts while hitting five 3s and Anthony Jeffers recorded 10.
The Red Riders will travel to Hampshire in the Region 1 co-finals on Wednesday night.
Edison bows out
MALVERN -- The Edison boys basketball team dropped a 67-29 contest to undefeated Malvern in Division III sectional action on Friday night.
JD Henderson had eight points to lead the Wildcats.
