Big second inning leads Weir High past Edison, 7-4

WEIRTON -- The Weir High baseball team plated the game's first five runs with an outburst in the bottom of the second inning and then fended off visiting Edison for a 7-4 win on their home turf Monday evening.
After a scoreless first inning, the game's first run was brought in by a bases-loaded balk to start the Red Riders' big inning, then Colson Kimmel made it 2-0 with an RBI groundout.
Cayden Braswell hit an RBI single, then Colin "G" Cross delivered a sac fly and Lucac McAllister cranked an RBI double to make it 5-0.
That remained the score until an Evan Kimmerle solo homer got Edison on the board in the fourth. Kimmerle got an RBI hit by pitch in the fifth to make it 5-2, then a run on a passed ball and another on Kayden Russel's RBI groundout got the Wildcats back within a run at 5-4.
That was it for the rally, though, Trey Cook (sac fly in the fifth) and Kimmel (RBI single in the sixth) added to the Red Rider lead on the way to victory.
Liam Williamson fanned five in the first four innings to be the winning pitcher for the Red Riders, Aleks Zanieski going the final three innings with three strikeouts for a save.
CCHS wins big
STEUBENVILLE -- The Catholic Central baseball team's bats were going early and often on Monday.
The Crusaders plated 10 runs in the first inning on the way to a 25-5 win over visiting Brideport at Vaccaro Field.
Peyton Rauch led the offensive onslaught with a triple, two singles and six RBIs, while Brayden Rauch had a double, single and two RBIs, Alex Solema had a double, single and three RBIs and Eli Fayak drove in a pair of runs.
Daniel Free was the winning pitcher with two strikeouts in three innings, while Solema pitched a scoreless two innings with four punchouts.
Big Red's streak ends
DOVER -- The Big Red baseball team's winning streak came to an end at nine games with a 4-3 loss in extra innings on the road at Dover on Monday.
Big Red battled back to tie the game after an early deficit but the Tornadoes got the last hit in the bottom of the eighth.
Brody Saccoccia was 3 for 3 with an RBI, Matt Fabbro also drove in a run and Hayden Hicks had a pair of hits for Big Red, while Aydan Manning struck out seven in 7 1/3 innings on the mound.
SOFTBALL
Brooke walks-it-off
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke softball team's ace reached a milestone and the Bruins got a dramatic victory on Monday evening at home.
M Brown's sac fly in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Bruins to a walk-off 5-4 win over visiting Linsly, while Alexa Foresha's six strikeouts put her over the 100 mark for the season.
Emilee McKinney drove in a pair of runs for the Bruins, while Wyntar McQuinston also plated a run.
Edison tops Buckeye
RICHMOND -- The Edison softball team rolled to a 12-1 win over visiting Buckeye Local on Monday evening.
Sophia Henderson had a double, single and three RBIs, Abigail Boka hit a home run and a single, Rebecka Evans tripled and singled, and Audrina Reese and Alli Shrieve each doubled and drove in a run.
In the circle, Shrieve fanned five.
Tatum Walker had the Panthers' lone RBI.
TENNIS
Locals compete in OVACs
WHEELING -- The OVAC Tennis Tournament began Monday with girls doubles.
Oak Glen's combo of Gabi Pasco/Elle Monaco were defeated by Weir's Jenna Costello/Megan Dunmyer, 8-4; OG's Leah McMahan/Ruby Chaney defeated Parkersburg South's Lauren Powers/Maya Parrish, 8-4; Then, Leah /Ruby lost to Wheeling Park's Reese Moores/Harper Moores, 8-5. OG's Kaylex Gibson/Reese Witherow defeated Indian Creek's Sophie Doerr/Leah McFarland, 8-4, then Gibson /Witherow defeated Linsly's Rhiannon Jones/Rachel Edinger, 8-1. Gibson/Witherow defeated Morgantown's Tina Chen/Joyce Hu, 8-3, then Gibson/Witherow lost in the final to University's Brooklyn Rutledge/Hannah Stemple, 8-6.
The tournament concludes today with singles.
