Madonna drops a close sectional battle at Wheeling Central

WHEELING -- Wheeling Central plated a run in the bottom of the second inning and that proved to be the only run of the game as the Maroon Knights edged Madonna, 1-0, in Class A Region 1, Section 1 tournament action on Thursday.

Wheeling Central, the top seed, advances to Saturday's sectional final, where it will be the host and have to be beaten twice to be denied the title and trip to the regional tournament.

Madonna pitcher Kendall Ryan fired a strong performance in the circle to give the Blue Dons an opportunity for the upset, striking out four and walked four while limiting the Maroon Knights to four hits. The run Wheeling Central scored was unearned.

Madi Owens and Mia Pietranton each had a base hit in the game for Madonna.

The Blue Dons host Magnolia today at home at Starvaggi Field in an elimination game at 5:30 p.m.

"We had a great gane plan and the girls followed it to perfection, we just came up a little bit short," Madonna coach Jason Backel said. "Kendall pitched her best game of the season."
