Wheeling Central pulls away from Brooke for 4-1 win

WELLSBURG — The Brooke girls’ soccer team battled back from a halftime deficit, however, the Bruins could not keep the momentum on their side.

Wheeling Central tallied the final three goals of the match to collected a 4-1 victory on a hot Monday evening on the grass soccer field at Brooke.

The Bruins knotted the score at 1 with 26:51 remaining in the match, however, the Maroon Knights controlled things from that point.

“We are fighting some injuries, so that does not help,” Brooke (0-2-1) head coach Jack Minger said. “We have a chance to rest up for a few a days before our next game Thursday against Wheeling Park. We are going to get the chance to rest and hopefully get healed up.”

The girls in white applied offensive pressure throughout the match, and the visitors were able to capitalize on four of their opportunities.

“The girls played well,” first-year Wheeling Central (1-1) head coach Ashley Winters said. “We dominated the whole game. We were kind of slow at the beginning, but then we picked it up. We made some adjustments, and we really picked it up in the second 40 minutes.”

Brooke Porter, Rylee Wright, Loni Kusic and Seneca Heller all contributed a goal for the girls from Ohio County. Also for the victors, Rylee Wright delivered two assists, while Elizabeth Steele and Gianna Konkle each chipped in with one.

Bella Fitzsimmons made five saves in goal for the visitors.

Aaliyah Siegel tallied the lone goal of the match for the Green-and-Gold. Morgan McMahon contributed the assist.

Ivy Myers made 13 saves in goal for the hosts.

Porter opened the scoring in the match with 3:09 left to play in the first half to give Wheeling Central a 1-0 lead. The Maroon Knights led 1-0 at halftime.

Siegel scored for the girls in the green jerseys to tie the score at 1 with 26:51 to still showing on the scoreboard clock.

Siegel’s goal gave the home team a boost, however, it did not last long.

Wright answered right back with a goal just 49 seconds later to regain the lead for Wheeling Central at 2-1.

“That team is very good,” Minger said. “We have to do a better job of connecting on our passes. That is something we are going to have to work on. They moved very well.”

Kusic then scored almost five minutes later to extend the Maroon Knights’ advantage out to 3-1 with 21:07 left to play.

Heller capped the scoring in the match with 3:22 left on the clock

“We knew what we were getting ourselves into coming here today,” Winters said. “We know what they are capable of. They are a good team. We knew the players we had to mark and get after and cover in the field. We did our jobs very well. They are a great team.”

Both teams are scheduled to return to the pitch Thursday. Brooke is set to take on rival Wheeling Park at 6 p.m. down at Wheeling Island Stadium, while Wheeling Central is set to take on Weir at 7:30 p.m. at home.

“The girls did well,” Winters said. “Bella made some really nice saves in goal. I can not ask for more. It was a good win.”
