Red Riders sweep past Wildcats
RICHMOND -- The Weir High volleyball team got back in the win column on Thursday, sweeping Edison on the road 25-18, 25-8, 25-20.
Weir is now above the .500 mark at 6-5.
Amalia Kirlingitis had 18 assists, seven digs and an ace, Brayley Lash tallied six kills, two aces and a block, Maleeah Faulks registered seven kills, two aces and three digs and Janai Turner tallied 16 digs and two aces.
For Edison, Sophia Henderson tallied 10 digs, four blocks and 12 assists, LeighAnne Anderson recorded two kills and six digs, Gracie Dray finished with seven digs and six kills and Mimi Ault had four points and three kills.
Crusaders sweep
STEUBENVILLE -- The Catholic Central volleyball team swept past visiting Beallsville on Thursday, 25-14, 25-13, 25-17.
The win lifts Central to 5-3 on the season.
Lilly Balzano recorded 12 kills, 11 assists, 11 points and two aces, Ava Marcino tallied eight kills, 17 assists, five aces and 12 points, Natalie Cherepko tallied seven kills, five blocks, two digs, an ace and five points and Gianna Lemal finished with 12 points, two aces, four digs, five blocks and three kills.
GOLF
Edison tops CCHS
STEUBENVILLE -- The Edison boys golf team topped Catholic Central on Thursday at Steubenville Country Club by a score of 187-205.
Cash Meadows led the Wildcats with a 43, while Luke Feralli shot a 47, Isaiah Filburn turned in a 48 and Jon Witlatch shot a 49.
Buckeye falls to Ferry
RAYLAND -- Bec-Wood Hills Golf Course was the site of golfers from Buckeye Local, Martins Ferry, Bridgeport and St. John on Thursday, with the Panthers and Purple Riders fielding full teams in a head-to-head match which Ferry took by a thin margin, 168-171.
Buckeye Local's Kamden Kinyo turned in another strong performance for the Panthers, earning medalist honors with a 39.
Martins Ferry's top team score came from the combined efforts of Julia Hancock (40), Hunter Shutler (40), Nolan Zambori (42), and Vinnie West (46).
Bridgeport and St. John each had two representatives on the course Thursday. St. John's Kyle Baker led the Fighting Irish with a 51.
Bruins top field
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke Bruins girls golf team had a strong showing in the nearby venue of Brooke Hills Park on Thursday, topping squads from Wheeling Park and Wheeling Central.
Brooke finished with a team total of 133, followed by Park at 147 and Central at 157.
The Bruins' Ellie McDonald claimed medalist honors in the outing, carding a 41. She was followed by Grace Shepard (45), while Sophia Wilkerson (47) and Annabelle Haught (47) tied for the third add.
Big Red edges Brooke
WHEELING -- The Big Red golf team edged past Brooke by three strokes 165-168 on Wednesday at Oglebay's Crispin Course.
Big Red is now 11-3.
Steubenville's Christopher Elliott was medalist with a 36, Marco Orecchio fired a 40, Jaggar Rawson shot a 44 and Noah Kokiko fired a 45.
For Brooke, Henry Anderson shot a 40, Andrew Petrella fired a 42, as did Clay Wood and Max Malinski turned in a 44.
CROSS COUNTRY
Edison wins home meet
RICHMOND -- Edison's boys and girls teams won a home meet on Thursday.
On the boys side, the Wildcats put five runners in the top 10 to top the team scores. They were Brock Koehnlein (third), Blaine Hoobler (fourth), Liam Westfall (sixth), Nate Kline (eighth) and Nate Green (10th).
On the girls side, Annie Board topped the field, while Lydia Krepps was fifth and Hallie Westbrook was eighth.
