STEUBENVILLE -- Take 1 is complete.
The Big Red girls soccer team scored two quick goals and did not look back en route to defeating Jefferson County foe Indian Creek, 8-0, via mercy rule on Senior Night Tuesday night on Reno Saccoccia Field inside Harding Stadium.
"It was a good game," Big Red (12-3) head coach Annie Cutri said. "We got off to a great start. We scored two goals in the first few minutes. We have worked all season on coming out, and we finally came out strong to start the game."
Big Red led 6-0 at halftime.
"They are a good team," Indian Creek (3-12) head coach Danny Lawrence said. "We did not want to give up a fast start. We let in some early goals. They got off to a strong start, and we did not get off right away. Our start was delayed."
Offensively, Big Red was led by junior standout Bailee Beall, who tallied five goals and one assist. Beall scored her fifth goal early in the second half to set a new single season scoring record at Big Red. Beall has now scored 34 goals to break the old record of 33 held by Mary Marshall.
"Her having the record is well deserving," Cutri said. "She has done a great job putting the ball into the back of the net. She's a solid player. She is so deserving of it. She beat Mary Marshall's record. Kudos to her for getting the record."
Also for Big Red, Amelia Collopy collected a goal and two assists, Kenzy Petrelle produced a goal and an assist and Hadley Schrader scored a goal. Finally, Gianna Thomas, Lucy Saccoccia and Ireland Marshall all delivered an assist.
"Annie has done a great job," Lawrence said. "She has her girls well disciplined and well drilled. You could see that today.
"We see them again Monday in the state tournament. Today was kind of a dress rehearsal for that one. We wanted to see what we can do. The real deal is Monday.
"As the game went on, we were able to pick things up and do what we do."
Big Red was able to control the ball and the match as the Red-and-Black did not allow the Redskins to take a shot on goal.
"They moved (Kaydence) Walker from last year," Cutri said. "They moved her into center mid. She is a talented player. She is definitely a threat in the middle of the field."
Beall netted the first two goals of the match. The first one was assisted by Collopy, while the second one was assisted by Thomas.
Petrelle contributed the third goal of the match for the victors off of a feed from Beall. Beall then picked up her third and fourth goals of the match to increase Big Red's advantage to 5-0. The first goal was unassisted, while the second one was assisted by Saccoccia.
Collopy capped the scoring in the first half when he scored off an assist by Marshall.
Beall's record-setting goal was assisted by Collopy, and Petrelle assisted on Schrader's goal.
"Today, we wanted to show up and play," Lawrence said. "We wanted to prove we are not a push over.
"We won yesterday. We beat John Marshall, 1-0. We have good feelings from that. This is not the type of team you want to get off to a slow start against. They have only lost two games for a reason, and those were to good teams."
Prior to the start of the match, Big Red honored their nine seniors – Ava Antill, Gianna Bracone, Destynasia Christian, Magdalene Crisante, Aubrey Duggan, Julissa Green, Adalynn Huff, Mady Thacker and Collopy.
"The seniors started and finished the game," Cutri said. "It was nice they were able to get the win tonight. They started as freshmen in my first year as head coach. They are my girls. I am excited to see what they do in the future, not only in soccer, but when they get out of high school and go to college. Senior Night is always special."
Indian Creek's six seniors are Destiny Ratkovec, Ava Paterra, Hannah Long, Elizabeth Aguilera, Kat Roush and Lucianna Pietro.
Big Red is scheduled to play Linsly at 6 p.m. Thursday on the road.
Indian Creek is scheduled to play Magnolia at 7 p.m. Thursday night at Kettlewell Stadium. The game between the Redskins and the Blue Eagles was rescheduled from last week when their game was canceled due to a lack of officials.
Big Red and Indian Creek are scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the first round of the Ohio Division III Eastern District Tournament.
"We play them again Monday," Cutri said. "That is the one that matters. We did some different things tonight. We moved some girls around. We wanted to see how things flowed. This game was kind of like an exhibition."
