STEUBENVILLE -- The Big Red girls soccer team has once again claimed the title of city champions.
Big Red tallied to late goals to secure a 4-1 victory against city-rival Catholic Central in the second match of the 12th Annual Together We Care Soccer Cancer Benefit Saturday afternoon on Reno Saccoccia Field inside Harding Stadium.
Big Red led 2-1 before scoring two insurance goals to put the match out of reach.
"I feel like we started slow before we got things rolling," Big Red (11-3) head coach Annie Cutri said. "We as coaches were on our toes. We knew they had it in them to dominate. It took a little while for us to get rolling."
Big Red delivered the first two goals of the match before the Crusaders responded with one midway through the second half to cut their deficit to 2-1.
"I thought we played great," Catholic Central (10-3-2) head coach Jonathan Hoover said. "It was an intense game. It's the city rivalry. I thought we played very well from start to finish. We just could not find the equalizer."
Bailee Beall tallied two goals and an assist to lead the way offensively for Big Red, Gianna Thomas netted a goal and an assists and Kenzy Petrelle collected a goal. Sagan Smarrella also had an assist for the victors.
Mary Rhode delivered the lone goal for the visitors.
Madilyn Thacker recorded four saves in goal for Big Red.
Catholic Central used two goalies in the match. Josey Urbanczyk started in goal before leaving the field with an injury. She was replaced on the pitch by Aurie Hoover. Urbanczyk replaced Hoover in goal during the second half. Urbanczyk and Hoover each made two saves on the day.
Big Red is scheduled to play Indian Creek on Senior Night at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.
Catholic Central is slated to play Brooke at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night on the road in the second match of a boys and girls doubleheader.
