WHEELING – All it took was one.
The Weir Red Riders captured the Class A-AA Region 1, Section 1 championship over the Wheeling Central Maroon Knights on Saturday, 1-0, on the pitch at the East Wheeling Turf Field.
The game’s lone score came in the 43rd minute from Weir’s Kaelyn Engle. After a first half of very few close calls, let alone goals, Engle’s kick found its way past Central’s keeper, who had ventured out of the goal, and slowly meandered through the posts just before Maroon Knight defenders crashed down on it.
It was only the second shot on goal of the game for Weir, and their last. Wheeling Central had three shots on goal throughout the whole of the game- though they controlled possessions for the vast majority of play, and attempted many more shots that were not on-frame Saturday.
Weir keeper Rayna Hoover finished with two saves, as did Wheeling Central keeper Bella Fitzsimmons.
Wheeling Central’s season ends with an 18-3-1 record. They defeated Tyler 10-0 in a sectional semifinal game on Oct. 23. The Red Riders improve to 13-3-4, and will face the East Fairmont Bees (21-1) in regionals. The Bees defeated Hampshire 10-0 on Saturday.
