Creek takes control, pulls away from Huskies
WINTERSVILLE — The Indian Creek girls basketball team took control against Harrison Central in the second quarter, and the Redskins never looked back against their Buckeye 8 rivals.
Indian Creek led by just two points at the end of the first, however, the Red-and-Gold outscored the Huskies 46-9, in the final three quarters to pull away for a 56-19 victory Monday night on Coach D Court.
The running clock came into play in the fourth quarter.
“Our defensive pressure changed,” Indian Creek (3-1) head coach Steve Eft said. “The girls got after it. They stepped it up on defense. Our guards did a good job with their pressure. They have nice post players, so we wanted to pressure their guards. We wanted to keep their hands off the ball. The girls did a really good job. I am proud of them.”
The girls from Jefferson County tallied the first 16 points of the second to build a commanding 26-8 advantage.
“We played uninspiring and undisciplined basketball,” Harrison Central (1-2) head coach Chase Smith said asked what changed after the first quarter. “We made mistakes. We just played undisciplined and uninspiring basketball.
“Give credit to Indian Creek. They are a good team. It was just uninspiring basketball from everybody who played. It is embarrassing really. Give credit to Indian Creek. They are a good team. They attacked the basket. They played well, and we didn’t.
“There was some physicality. It was 10-8 at the end of the first. They played with physicality, and we did not match it. They beat us to the ball.
“McKenna Scott has been doing this for a long time. Coach Eft has been doing this for a long time. We just played uninspiring basketball.”
Three players scored in double digits to lead the way for the home team. Senior standout point guard McKenna Scott tallied a game-high 14 points, Kaydence Walker collected 12 and Riley Sadler recorded 10.
Lauren Doane delivered a team-high seven points to lead the way for the girls from Harrison County, while Mikayla Pelegreen produced five.
The Redskins were able to create turnovers and scoring transition.
“It’s a good thing because we struggled in out half-court stuff,” Eft said. “Gabby (Taylor) is hurt, and we have girls doing some different roles out on the court. We were sloppy in the half-court. Fortunately, we were able to create some turnovers, and we were able to score in transition.”
The girls in white took a 10-8 lead at the end of the first, and after scoring the first 16 points of the second took a 26-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The victors extended their advantage to 41-12 entering the fourth.
“They will be fine as long as they have McKenna Scott getting downhill and creating for everyone,” Smith said. “She’s a great player. We have not had much luck here. They are a good team, and we don’t play well here.
“It was not pretty. Give credit to Indian Creek. We had some turnovers. I don’t know how many turnovers we had, but we game them the basketball.
“We lost our minds. We had a lot of mental errors from our seniors. I expect more out of them, and they expect more out of themselves.”
Indian Creek outscored Harrison Central, 15-5, in the fourth to account for the final score.
“We are low in numbers, but I am happy with the girls’ effort,” Eft said. “The girls come to practice, and they work really hard. The girls are starting to come together. We are starting to jell. Gabby is hurt right now, but other than that, I like what I am seeing from the girls.”
Harrison Central is scheduled to play Wednesday at home against Beaver Local.
“We play four games in seven days,” Smith said. “We play Beaver Local and then we play Catholic Central Saturday. Both of those games are at home. Then, we play East Liverpool Monday.
“We have to have a short memory. We are going to have to try and regroup. We have to get back after it. I still think we can be a good team.”
Indian Creek is slated to play East Liverpool Thursday up at Potter Fieldhouse.
