Big Red sweeps the 40th Early Bird Invite

STEUBENVILLE -- Big Red's girls and boys track teams ran away with the team titles at Saturday's 40th-annual Steubenville Early Bird Invitational.

The girls totaled 149 points, far outdistancing runner-up Martins Ferry at 57 points, with Wheeling Park (53), Philo (51) and Wheeling Central (51) rounding out the top five.

The scores were slightly closer on the boys' side, with Steubenville accumulating 120 points to runner-up Wheeling Park's 70. Philo (64), Wheeling Central (64) and Catholic Central (61) closed out the fop five.

On the girls side, Big Red sophomore Arianna Crabtree doubled up in her signature events -- the 100 high and 300 low hurdles -- winning in 16.06 and 50.84, respectively.

Freshman Kaycee King began her quest to become the next great Big Red girls' sprinter, capturing the 200 in 27.43 as teammate Za'Herryah Herring came in third. Junior Laila Reed finished second in the 100. King was third in the 400, with teammate and classmate Addison Snyder winning the one-lap dash in 1:04.99

Snyder won the long jump in 15-7.50.

Edison's Josie Lesnansky captured the 3,200 in 13:30.90 with teammate Layla White finishing third. White was eighth in the 800, won by Martins Ferry's Alanna Williams. Catholic Central's Mary Rohde came in second in the 1,600 and fifth in the 800.

Williams won the 800, with Aubrey Duggan and Natalie Romanyak of Big Red finishing second and third, respectively. Weir's Naomi Young was fourth.

Big Red performed strong in the relay events, capturing all but the 4×800, which went to Weir in 10:40.97. Edison came in second.

Steubenville's 4×100 team was victorious in 51.79, the 4×200 team in 1:50.25, and the 4×400 team in 4:26.83.

Caldwell's field event dynamo Gwynn Lori started the season strong winning both the shot and disc in impressive fashion, with marks of 42-5 and 141-9 in the events. Big Red's Phynyx Fleming and Sarah Ostovich went 2-3 in the shot, while teammate Bri Hudson threw 127-9 in the disc.

On the boys' side, while Big Red ran away with the team title, Catholic Central's Andrew Rohde turned in a solid individual performance.

Rohde was the lone competitor to eclipse the 10-minute mark in the eight-lap event, finishing in 9:29.67. Teammate Cash Dobson came in second. In the 1,600, Rohde won in 4:37.29, with Big Red's Owen Obrien coming in third.

Big Red's Ziare Scurry picked up where he left off last season and clocked a 48.97 to easily capture the 400, with teammate Josiah Rea coming in third. Jemier Fauls won the half-lap sprint, capturing the 200 in 22.90.

Rea captured the high jump, earning the win on jumps with Catholic Central's James McInnis and Wheeling Park's J.T. Pockl. All cleared 6-4, but Rea came in first and McInnis second. Rea also finished third in the 110 meter hurdles behind Philo's Deacon Scott and Edison's Matt Evans. Evans came back later to win the 300 intermediate hurdles in 43.76, edging Big Red's Orlando Anderson (43.96).

Catholic Central's Joe Owen finished second in the 800.

Big Red's relays won the 4×200, 400 and 800.

Toronto's Steven Ohalek came in fourth in the discus at 129-11 while Big Red's Colton Henderson and Will Taylor were second
