WEIRTON — The Madonna softball team was ready to go Saturday in its home opener.
The Blue Dons plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning and did not look back, getting into the win column with a 7-3 win over visiting Magnolia Saturday in their home opener at Starvaggi Park.
The wiu evens the Blue Dons record up at 1-1.
Rylee Birkhimer had a pair of doubles, Gina Birkhimer had a double and an RBI, Chloe Orecchio had two hits and an RBI and Ally Laughlin tripled and drove in a run to lead the Madonna offense.
In the circle, Kendal Ryan went the distance, striking out 10 batters and walking just one on the way to a complete game victory. Just one of the three runs against was earned.
Madonna is slated to host Catholic Central on Monday.
Oak Glen falls at home
NEW MANCHESTER — Visiting Morgantown fended off an Oak Glen rally Saturday afternoon to hand the Golden Bears their first loss of the season in three outings, 8-6.
After the Bears took a 3-0 lead in the third, the Mohigans opened an 8-4 advantage going to the bottom of the seventh. Oak Glen plated two runs to get in striking distance, but the visitors hung on.
For Oak Glen, Riley Bruce had a triple, single and an RBI, Addie Smith had three hits and drove in three runs and Danica Holden doubled and plated a pair of runs.
Mattie Carney struck out six in the circle, going the distance. Just three of the eight runs were earned.
The Golden Bears are back at home Tuesday to host Wheeling Park.
BASEBALL
Weir High falls to JM
WEIRTON — The Weir High baseball team rallied back from a big deficit to force extra innings against visiting John Marshall on Saturday afternoon, but dropped a 14-9 decision in eight for their first set back of the season.
The Red Riders led 3-1 after two innings, but the Monarchs plated three in the top of the third to take the lead.
JM built the lead up to 9-4 going to the bottom of the seventh, but Weir High rallied with five runs to extend the game to an extra inning.
In the eighth, though, the Monarchs plated five runs to take the victory.
For Weir High, Lucas McAllister had a home run, a double and finished with three RBIs, while Colson Kimmel had a double, two singles and drove in a pair of runs.
Liam Williamson also doubled and had two hits and two RBIs for the Red Riders.
McAllister also stuck out five in tossing the firtst five innings on the mound, while Cayden Braswell fanned three in two innings of relief work.
The Red Riders are set to host Brooke on Tuesday evening.
Linsly edges Madonna
WHEELING — The Madonna baseball team rallied back from a big deficit on Saturday at Linsly, but the Cadets rebounded to get a walk-off win, 11-10, in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The loss evens the Blue Dons’ record up at 1-1.
Linsly led 4-1 after one inning and 8-2 through five innings, but the Dons plated six in the sixth to pull even and took a 10-8 lead in the top of the seventh, but the Cadets drove in three in the bottom half to take the win.
“I’m proud of the boys effort and fight today,” Madonna head coach TJ Miller said. “We fell behind early but battled back to take the lead only to fall just short. Our bats were very active today. We just need to work hard on eliminating the errors. We need to make the routine plays more consistently in the field to help our pitchers out. I think with more field time, we’ll be fine.
“We will get back to work and keep working to get better each day.”
For Madonna, David Connors tallied a home run and a single, driving in three runs, while Jacob Lazear doubled and drove in three runs.
Matt Geer went 4 for 5 at the plate with two RBIs, while Reed Wilharm had a double and Reno Fuscardo tallied two hits.
The Dons travel to Wheeling Central on Monday evening.
Brooke wins two
GRAFTON — Playing in a split doubleheader on Saturday, the Brooke baseball team got its first two wins of the season on Saturday, topping Elkins 19-5 in the first game and Grafton 4-0 in the second.
In the win over Elkins, Henry Anderson had a homer, single and three RBIs, while Gino Provenzano tallied a double, two hits and three RBIs.
Jayden Lucas and Andrew Murdock each plated a pair of runs for the Bruins.
On the mound, Parker McMahon and Blaine Beatty combined to strike out 10 batters.
In the second game, Anderson had a pair of hits and Provenzano and Noah McMahon each drove in a run.
Anderson was dominant on the mound as well, striking out nine batters in four innings for the win, while Murdock went the final three innings, fanning four to complete the combined shutout two-hitter.
The Bruins, now 2-1, travel to John Marshall on Monday evening.
