Wildcats storm back to down Brooke

RICHMOND — The Edison softball team dug itself a big hole, but the Wildcats were able to dig their way out of it.

Brooke jumped out to a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second, however, Edison answered with 12 runs in the home half of the inning, and the Wildcats did not look back en route to a 17-7 five-inning victory against the Bruins on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.

The game was the season-opener for Edison, while it was the fourth game of the season for Brooke.

“We persevered,” Edison (1-0) head coach McKenzie Morrison said. “We did not hit the ball very well in the first inning, but we came back in the second and hit the ball really well.”

After scoring a dozen runs in the second, the hosts tallied four more in the fourth and one in the fifth to end the game.

The Green-and-Gold plated five runs in the first and one more in the second to take a 6-0 lead, however, the visitors were only able to score one more run the rest of the day. After falling behind 12-6, the visitors from Brooke County collected a run in the fourth, however, the girls in black plated the final five runs to end the game via mercy rule.

“It was brutal weather,” Brooke (0-4) head coach Tommy Diserio said. “It was 80 degrees on out first day. Then, we have had rain, sleet and high winds. The weather made it tough.”

Leighann Anderson picked up the win in the circle for the Wildcats. Anderson started the game, and she struck out one and walked four in her four innings of work. Anderson was replaced inside the circle by Mylie Powley who did not record a strikeout while walking one in one inning of work.

“It was hard to pitch today,” Morrison said. “It was hard to pitch in all the rain.”

Karson Drumm started the game in the cirlce, and she took the loss for Brooke. Drumm struck out one and walked seven in her one inning of work. Gabby Hornick came on to pitch during the second, and she struck out three and walked one in her 3 2/3 innings of relief work.

It was hard to pitch. It was hard for the pitchers to grip the ball. The two coaches and the umpires tried our best make sure the ball was dry, but it did not happen.”

Edison pounded out 11 hits on the day.

Individually, Bella Cronin tallied two singles, a triple and three RBI to lead the way for the victors. Also, Anderson added three singles and an RBI, Alivia Hanlin collected a single, a double and three RBI and Ali Shrieve, Sophia Henderson and Lily Scaffidi all delivered a single.

Brooke produced five hits.

Emma Bober recorded two singles and two RBI to lead the way offensively for Brooke, Emma Hayman contributed a double and two RBI and Jazz Wood delivered a single and an RBI.

The Wildcats committed three errors in the adverse conditions.

“Defensively, I thought we played pretty well,” Morrison said. “We did have a couple of errors, but the girls worked hard. They persevered.”

Brooke committed one error in the game.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again at 5 p.m. Monday at Brooke.

“We have played Linsly, John Marshall, Wheeling Park and Edison, and we will play Edison again Monday,” Diserio said. “Then, we have Big Red and Poland Saturday.

“The good thing about the weather was it was even playing field. Both teams had to play in the weather and with these field conditions.”
